Fred enjoyed his years as a subscriber to the Sandstorm. He often
shared photos and stories from your mailing list with his family
and friends about Richland and Hanford in the "old days." Our
standing joke, from the time we first met in 1959 was that we
never needed a night light because Fred glowed in the dark, being
a downwinder of the first order. He was very pleased to be able
to re-connect with classmates and old friends on Sandstorm.
He was proud to be a Bomber and really enjoyed reminding his
"uberliberal" friends that the liberties they cherished
and sought came in no small part because of the scientific
achievements that came from Hanford and the dusty little town
in South-Central Washington called Richland, with the mushroom-
shaped cloud as its lasting symbol.

Re: Class of '52 reunion
I saw Jim BLAKE's ('52) entry today... I sure hoped we do have a
60 year reunion for Class of '52! No chatter about it yet, and
typically we "lean" on those who live in or near Tri-Cities.
Anyone out there "working the problem" yet? In the past we often
"went our own way" instead of dovetailing with Club 40. I surely
don't have a strong preference, but combining with Club 40 seems
o.k. to me... as long as we have our own banquet seating and
activities on Saturday night. As for Ruth and I, "dancing until
dawn" no longer seems quite as important as it did in earlier
years! Ha! What say, '52-ers????
Get well, Jim! Be there! And "GO, HOGS!" (with apologies to our
editor! Not!)

wandering in the southwest (currently in Corpus Christi, TX)

Re: Health Problems
Wow! You really did have the "scare", but so glad to read
(although, I admit, I was a bit afraid to keep reading) that all
is okay and you don't require any further "probes" or "pricks" or
"pokes" or whatever else doctors can "dream up". *grin* I have
never seen any of your fireworks, but I enjoy reading about them
and the many places that you go to "shoot them, off". Take care,
fellow Bomber.
-Linda REINING ('64) ~ weird weather in Bakersfield, CA... can't
make up its mind if it wants to be Spring or Winter... we
have had 80s, 70s, and 60s, all since Christmas. I'd prefer
it to stay down in the 50s, but not sure Mother Nature is
willing to co-operate with me. *grin*

Re: Class of '72 40 Year Reunion
I was delighted to see that Barb BELCHER Valinske ('72) is
recruiting committee members for the Class of '72 reunion. With
Barb on it, it will be great!
Ok, I can't lick stamps from here, but if you guys can put it
together, I'll come! Consider this your first RSVP. Just let me
know when and where.
And, since we qualify for Club 40 this year, I know there's
sometimes lobbying to get the incoming Club 40 class on the same
page of the calendar with that reunion. Can anybody shed light on
when that might be held in 2012? July? August?
I think I just marked my strangest Christmas ever. I spent two
hours in the office (shame on me) trying to book a ticket into
Somalia. Yes, Somalia. Not a primary tourist location, but one
that I sometimes visit on duty travel. I've been full time with
World Food Programme for the past two years (as "Regional Staff
Counsellor") and two of our staff members were shot on a field
mission there on 23 December. I arrived at our office in Galkayo
on 27 December, right on the border between Somalia and Puntland,
before I got the full story. Some gatekeeper with a gun got
trigger happy and killed three people before he turned and handed
over his weapon and himself to another guard. Here's hoping that
2012 will be much happier.
-Vicki OWENS ('72) ~ Kampala, Uganda where it's warm and sunny,
as ever!
