Re: In The Aftermath
I am at home south of Tacoma in Pierce County, WA. I love to
travel, almost as much as "entertaining with fire". But it is
always nice to come home. Especially from a long trip, or one
ending in a crisis.
A BIG humble THANK YOU to all who wrote with good wishes both to
here, and my personal email. I will get back to all of you
personally, as I have time in the near future.
In the final analysis, the good cardio doctor decided it was very
unlikely that is was a heart attack. Rather, he felt it was a
"Transient Incident". Not to make lite of it, they can be serious
in their own way. It was interesting that he said that at first
after talking with me for 5 minutes on arrival.
But... if anything good can come from such an event... I at least
know from all the tests, that in the concerted opinion of 3
doctors and their learned assistants, there were NO indications
of any blockage in any of my cardio vascular system.
I have only an estimated 12% occlusion of the arteries in my
neck. That should not present any problems in the foreseeable
future provided I keep control of my cholesterol.
So baring some other malady getting me, I should have a fair
number of years left.
Looking back on that night, taking the stand I did was not likely
the smartest thing I ever did. But... it seemed right at the
time. Flying to Anchorage the next day I kept hearing 2 lines in
my head from the movie "Patton". He said "It is not important
for others to know when I am bluffing. It is only important for
me to know". And: "God help me, I do love it so". (Referring to
war of course). Gen. George Patton is near the top of my personal
"Hero List".
Got an email note today from the Assistant to the City Manager,
Unalaska, "The fireworks were tremendous, gobs of folks from all
over the city have had nothing but great things to say about
them".
So I will consider my efforts, and my trip a success in spite of
myself.
My next adventure is in April... Rome and Malta! I have been to
Rome once about 40 years ago. But I have wanted to see Malta
since I was about 8-9 years old. Malta has nearly 6000 years
of history. I will be a featured speaker to the International
Symposium on Fireworks (ISF) on Malta. I have a technical paper
on electrical firing of fireworks. But I am going early and
staying later. A couple of days after ISF is the annual Malta
Fireworks Festival. Jackie and I will be in the front row with
our cameras for that very famous event.
Live long and prosper....
"Happiness is the sky in bloom"

Happy Birthday to the Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis of the Tri-
City Dogs Baseball League. A different time and different place
might have fielded different results.
Heaven knows that the combination of Sooty to Quivers to Spud was
destined to the Hall of Gaines, and Doogan was not exactly all
bark and no bat. He, Gus and
Brownie just couldn't field without first sniffin'. Upon further
review, they also sniffed first.
Happy Birthday to Jim RUSSELL ('58), who I hear is now a Great
Grandfather.

Re: Where were you
Thanks to Dave HANTHORN ('63) for explaining the "bot" fiasco...
with his good advise, I guess I'll not be getting any more of
those "fun" emails from PJ LYONS ('64)... gotta take the good
with the bad... This morning on '50s on 5, Sammy Turner (NAB)
was singing "Lavender Blue Dilly Dilly"... my mind went at light
speed to a morning riding to the dump with my Dad... to the best
of my knowledge, it was the first time he ever let me listen to
an entire "rock n roll" (I know... not quite like Jailhouse Rock,
but you get the idea) song without changing the station... I am
amazed at the way my mind reacts to songs on the radio... I don't
just kinda "recall" where I was, I return to the moment... the
first time I heard "Sukiyaki" by Kyu Sakamoto, I was walking or
driving past the Cemetery on Williams going to the school for
something or other... with Mau Mau by the Fabulous Wailers, and
Roadrunner, it was my very first visit to "Jr Hi-Spot"... which
ended rather awkwardly by meeting Gary WEBB ('64) and Terry JONES
('64)... for the very first time... well not exactly a formal
introduction... Terry picked me up so I could see him better...
and Gary introduced his fist to my face... (ahhh the joys of boy
girl relationships in our teen years)... hard to forget those
songs with such great memories attached (come on guys... you
know it's just a memory... not anything more)... "Last Kiss" by
J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers plays and I'm in Zip's and a guy
is playing the song over and over... it would be 6 months before
the record would hit the national charts and we would make fun
of him for playing that "shi-t kicker music" for the full 6
months... I always remember it being Bobby CUMMINGS ('65) but
since many other people forget such nonsense after only a few
months or years I've never been able to confirm it... Then their
was Butch MANTHEI ('65), who wore out the grooves on "Pretty
Woman" on the Zip's Juke Box... "You've Lost that Lovin'
Feeling" by Bill and Bobby puts me in some diner when Pierre
REMILLARD ('65) and I were visiting his Grama in Walla Walla
and some guy kept playing Buck Owens' "Tiger by the tail"...
I noticed the last time I was in Bakersfield for the Hot Rod
Reunion (last October) it looks like Buck's ranch may have been
sold... the initials have been removed from the gates and some
other changes look like someone else may own it now... "Don't
Worry Baby" by the Beach Boys (the ring tone on my phone for
Bombers) takes me to Camas, during my short but memorable stay
there, Vicki Platt, the second most voluptuous girlfriend of my
young life and the one my Mom liked the least, and I would be
heading out to the woods to the lunch time drags... corse "Theme
from a Summer Place" takes me to noon dancing at Chief Jo...
swoooooooooooooon... I've mentioned Hank Ballard and "Finger
Poppin' Time" many times with Stuart ZIEGE ('57) drivin' past the
park where we '65ers hung out across from PARKERS' ('60); ('63);
('65)... dunno the brother's year) and my house... my all time
favorite slow song "Image of a Girl" finds me in 1960 lying on my
bed listening to Lynn BRYSON ('57) or the Real Don Steele and
dreaming impossible dreams... and a corse there is the summer of
'63 or '64, when I was driving in the dark to visit some 20 year
old chick while working in Walla Walla, I heard Waylon sing an
Ian Tyson song... "Four Strong Winds" and I became a fan for
life... funny, most times these time travel visitations hit me I
am usually under some car with my hands all greasy and can't take
the time to make a note of the song... I always mean to record
them all and do a Sandstorm entry... so I've only listed a few
today because I did manage to remember this morning and "Dilly
Dilly" when I got to work... I'm sure my music hero "Pitts"
ARMSTRONG ('63) can outdo me on many of these... but I've decided
that until I can manage a smile as big, as cool and as genuine as
his... I'll be happy to take second place!

Hi Maren!
LSU is reportedly stuck in New Orleans; a 50-yard line was
painted in front of the team bus.
The last time I saw a Tiger beat that bad, his wife was using a
golf club!
I'll be here [in Huntsville, AL] all week. Try the veal and don't
forget to tip the waitress.
Roll Tide!

[LSU Tigers accomplished much in the 2011 season: 13 wins
(8 against ranked opponents) and the SEC championship. Be proud,
