Re: Civil Air Patrol cadets
Quite a few of us Bombers (male and female) were CAP cadets
whilst attending COL-HI. As I understand it, the CAP squadron
was formed in the mid or late 1940s. The "cadet" program was
apparently started soon thereafter. I know there were class of
'48 and '49 Bombers in the cadet squadron. I joined the cadet
squadron summer of '49 when I joined my folks in Richland after a
year of military school. Quite a few of us learned to fly, many
taught by Bomber teacher Walt Lepage (RIP).
What I'm leading up to: Is there any interest in a gathering of
ex CAP cadets at Club 40 this September? Maybe at the Friday
night event or Sunday breakfast????
Some the CAP Bombers I recall well are Kay MITCHELL Coates ('52),
Richard "Dick" Meyer ('51), Ken ELY ('49), "Mick" MICKULECK
('50), Ken PAYNE ('52), "Buck" WEICHEL ('51), Vera ???, Mary Ann
Conklin ('52?), Jane ROLLISON Hightower ('52), Bill HIGHTOWER
('49), May Campbell ('52 or '53?)... others will come to mind.
Also.. .it would be nice to get some effort going to put together
sone sort of history of the cadet squadron, including the bios of
the members. Quite a few became career USAF people. Me, I bolted
the traces (somehow!) and was career USCG.
Any interest out there????

Re: Richland PD closing Carmichael Hill
Glad to read that it is only temporary. Good grief! Kids are
going to sled down that hill or any other place they can find
and they are going to get hurt... that's part of life! I am not
saying that it is okay that kids got seriously hurt, but closing
down the hill is NOT going to prevent accidents to kids! IF they
are so worried about the benches/dugout at the bottom, why not
put up hay bales as barriers? Put them along the fencing, the
kids would have "soft landing" and would prevent hitting the
benches/dugout.
-Linda REINING ('64) ~ Bakersfield, CA we had rain earlier in
the week and we might just get some more, this weekend.
keeping fingers crossed. Gonna be a long, dry summer IF we
don't get enough rain.

Re: Carmichael Hill
Gee only 2 accidents? I think that's pretty good! So why close
it? Someone is afraid of being sued is my guess! The same thing
happened here in Yakima... they closed a favorite hill the kids
love to sled on! Dang grown ups any way!! Let the kids have fun!
So there are few bumps & bruises, they will live! In the '60s I
don't think we knew the meaning of sued!! Or to be sued!
Don't be such kill joys!
