the vicinity of Wall, SD. I would hope those would include the

---coming to ALL 50 STATES!!!!
If any homeowners or business owners think they are safe from
FEMA and the NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM premium
increases imposed through The Biggert-Waters Act of 2012, THINK
AGAIN!!!!! So far, FEMA has only informed a few states (Louisiana,
New Jersey, and New York) that their citizens will experience up
to a 5,000% increase in flood insurance premiums within a few
years. Our Parish (County), St.Charles, was among the first to
be informed by FEMA about this last February. Now, they have
shocked most of Southeast Louisiana with the new FIRM maps. In
some areas, homes are expected to be raised/built as much as 19
feet off of the ground!!! The FEDS have lost $26 billion on
flood insurance claims even though they have taken in over $6
billion more in premiums than they have paid out in the last 30
years!!! GO FIGURE!!! Where did the other $20 billion go? In our
area, we paid $375 last year in an “X” zone (non-flood) since it
was set up in 1983. Flood insurance was not even required. Most
residents bought it anyway. I have paid premiums for 38 years
(including my previous home) and never made a single claim.
Now they are telling us that many residents in our area will
eventually be paying up to $28,000 or more a year!!! Our areas
have sent our local, state and federal politicians to
Washington, D.C. to try to undo this mess that both houses of
Congress passed by huge margins and Obama signed into law. They
are delaying some items and trying to amend others. But the law
is still in effect until it is amended permanently or thrown out
altogether.
Our area has NEVER flooded since our levees (dikes) were built
around 1900. Everyone needs to contact their politicians at
all levels and demand to know what is going on in YOUR area
regarding this!!

Anyone who ignores this can run but they can't hide!!! Please
check out this site and presentation. Just the announcement by
FEMA has brought home sales to a complete halt and devalued most
homes a huge amount. Our assessor has dropped our property taxes
by about $500 because values can't be determined since nothing
is selling.
People need to remember that about 50% of the U.S. population
lives near a coastline and over 80% live near a body of water.

Anyone remember the little blue books with punched holes at the
top and I think on a Tuesday a table was set in front of the
statue of Sacajawea and older students took our nickels, dimes,

I remember having Banking Day at Spalding... I don't remember
the day, but I remember the little, blue book, taking coins
to school, and having them added to the balance... I don't
remember if we took the books home or if they were kept with
the teachers... I also remember going to the bank, with my mom,
taking the book and withdrawing the amount that had accumulated,
but I don't remember if that was done at the end of each school
year, or if it was done the end of 6th grade, before going to
junior high.

Re: Remembering a dear friend
As you read this or scroll past it, I will be winging my way to
Richland for the 50 Year Reunion of the Gold Medal Class of
1963. As with every time I try and get ready for a trip, stuff
piles up and reaches critical mass just as I try and leave. I'm
doing my last case before retirement "for reals" (we never said
that... I think I got it from my daughter when she was in grade
school). Naturally I was waiting Tuesday for an Opposition to a
motion for summary Judgment which would have been due Monday but
for labor Day. They filed late Tuesday night so I was up reading
and making an outline for my reply which I had dictated before 9
Wednesday morning. My Arbitration Brief was also due along with
my exhibits. Actually they were not due till Friday but I'll be
in my lil' home town. While their brief weighed in at about 50
pounds, I was fortunate in that they made some of those most
ridiculous arguments and misstated both the facts and the law
which made my life a bit easier. So now I'm picking out clothes
for the trip. Now for us guys that's a pretty easy chore... my
biggest question is whether to bring long jeans or not. When I
get to town I wanna go visit the benches. Dick ('63), Pook ('63)
and the subject of this post. This guy held on like a trooper
and actually survived about 5 years after we held his "Please-
-don't-die-before-the-party, party" As he continued on we made
it clear that it is one party to a customer. We were fortunate
enough to spend some really wonderful times together and
actually had several more parties with him in attendance and
even held our yearly gathering at his house last summer. Every
20 days or so, my phone tells me I have messages that will be
erased unless I re-save them. One is the boy singing a song
asking if I'll be his valentine a year or two ago. Others are
updates on his cancer or just little "Hi how are ya's" (I still
have the last message Kenny JOHNSON ('65 RIP) and the bunch sent
a couple of days before Kenny passed, singing to KEENEY's ('65)
banjo)... A week or so before we lost him, I wrote a rather
long, heart felt piece to the SS and posted it on his face book
and mine. I doubt I can ever bring myself to that depth again
but I was certainly grateful I had made amends to him several
years before for some silly stunts I pulled when we were kids...
I know that life was not easy in the end for his wife and I hope
she knows that when we praise him, we fully understand what she
went through and in some cases is still saddled with to this day
and for some time to come... but he was my Pal... he was all our
Pal... I loved him as a brother and told him so often as I do
with all my friends. I know it makes some of them uneasy; it did
for him until maybe the last 5-6 years of his life and then he
reminded me every chance he got. I know I will go to the '63
Friday night gathering with a song in my heart, but can assure
you I will refrain from crashing the dinner until the memorials
are finished so I can just say "Hi" and "good to see you",
without a big lump in my throat. Steve SIMPSON ('65-RIP), I miss
you and love you, my dear friend. I was so very blessed to know
you. I can't believe a year has passed.

To all the "School Thrift" savings kids - future Bombers:
Oh, how well I remember school thrift banking days. Every one of
those little envelopes had to be counted, by hand, and records
kept for the little savers, because in those days bankers didn't
have counting machines. (now a days you cash a check and the
money is dispensed from a machine!). And yes, it was Seattle
First National Bank on Knight St., in Richland that maintained
the accounts for you. Egads, that goes back to 1947 and probably
before I started working there right out of Col-Hi (Ri-Hi). I
helped process those deposits so it is vivid in my memories.
Hope you young ones learned about saving from that!

By the time some of you slug-a-beds read this I should be on my
way to Bomberville. I see some of the usual suspects will be at
the festivities of Club 40. Others will be at different venues
around town.
Since a certain gate-crasher (who shall remain nameless) has
vowed not to crash until after the memorials, I would recommend
to the class of '63 to have the memorials after dinner. That way
he won't eat up all the food.
It might be crowded at the Spudnut Shop Saturday morning. Please
save one for me.

Re: Ciao from Florence Italy
Hello everyone,
We arrived in Florence a couple days ago but only today had an
internet connection in our apartment. Sorry for the mass mailing
to all of you, but this is the only way we'll get in touch for
now!
Had a delay in our flight from Seattle to Frankfurt, which meant
we had less than an hour layover instead of three hours that we
had expected. We had to rush but made the connecting flight to
Florence with just minutes to spare. I think we only breathed a
sigh of relief when we descended and saw the beautiful red dome
of the Duomo in Florence off in the distance.
Our landlord, Lorenzo Grechi, met us in front of our apartment
building, helped us get all of our ten carry-on bags and
suitcases plus cat into the apartment; we had a quick look-
around, and he took us across our street Via Faenze - all of 15
steps or so - and treated us to crostini and Brunello wine while
two workmen were installing air conditioning in our apartment.
The wine was a great way to relax after our overnight flight,
but we will not have air conditioning until the inspector
actually comes next week to check it.
It is slowly sinking in that we are really here! Beautiful old
buildings five or six stories high, narrow twisting streets,
LOTS of heat in the 90s, and of course everyone speaking
Italian so fast that we can sometimes pick out every tenth or
twentieth word. Fortunately most people speak a good amount of
English. We are trying to get our stuff organized, have gone
shopping two or three times in the local mini markets, have
started exploring some of the closer streets and today went into
the huge Mercato Centrale which is where most Florentines shop
for their meats, fruits and veggies. My first purchase there was
raspberries, Italian raspberries of course! Yesterday we started
our day by walking to the huge Duomo, which as it turns out is
only three short blocks from us. In the evening when we went
out strolling for a restaurant for dinner, we came across Le
Fonticine Ristorante which was very nice and had delicious food.
Whenever you come to visit, it is definitely a place we would
like to take you for dinner!
The cat did incredibly well the whole trip. We gave her a
sedative in Seattle and she slept most of the way, even when I
had to take her out of her carrier two times to take her thru
security check points. She seems reluctant to venture out of our
bedroom very much, but she does purr when we pet her, so she is
fine.
This afternoon Jerry and I spent about two hours translating the
instruction book for our washing machine, but finally we have
some clean clothes...we guess that everything will be a learning
experience like this one.

internet connection cooperates - I just tried to send a similar

MOVED:
We are all moved into our new home here in Kennewick. We've
decided that this will be our last moving adventure, haha.
Thought we had downsized, but by the looks of all the stuff and
no place to put it all, I think that we didn't do a good enough
job, haha. So nice to be "at home" once again. I do miss all our
friends and activities down in CA though. Our next adventure
will be to find a church that we feel comfortable attending.
Love the warmer temps, although it could be a tad bit cooler.
Today, it's in the 70s is really nice. Wow, 2 huge thunderstorms
since we've been here. I forgot what it could be like here.

My congratulations to Club 40 planners. For instance: very good
food Friday night... a clear improvement over some past events.
Thank you! Amazing how early "our" part of the night ended--one
'51 grad and his wife joined our table of mostly '52ers, after
the room had pretty well emptied out, saying, "I WILL make it
to 9 O'clock! I WILL make it to 9 O'clock! I WILL make it to 9
O'clock!!"
Class of '73 was still going strong when we passed their party
room.
All in all, a wonderful evening and THANK YOU, again, to the
shakers and movers.

Memories are made of this... a sweet sweet... I am totally
walking on air. I got home a few hours ago and made sure I got
all my work done for tomorrow so I've only eaten a Spudnut shop
cimamum roll and an egg McAirport, but if I don't send this I'll
fall asleep and everything will be old news. I can only say
that The BOEHNINGs ('63) and the '63 committee put on the most
wonderful event I have ever attended. I could never in my life
have anticipated having such a marvelous time at the Big Kids'
reunion, considering I was a mere lower classman (as Doug
HAWKINS ['62] would say) guest... and yes I spilled my milk
twice and they just patted me on the head and smiled... Thursday
was a day of meeting and greeting the other early arrivals and
chatting with ecb3 ('63) and his wife... we ran Mary Lou WATKINS
('63) to Pasco for a famblie get together and then Ellen
WEIHERMILLER ('63), Cecilia BENNETT ('65), Lyman POWELL ('65)
and I met over at Myra WEIHERMILLER's ('67) for the most
delicious snacks and salad and rain/lighting watching.
Friday morning, ML, Ellen, Ceci and I got to the Spudnut Shop at
8 to see and be seen... for the most part, we just shivered in
the cold and ate our Spuddies... Since Kippy Lou BRINKMAN ('62)
wasn't playing morning person, the girls may have met her again
at 10, but at a little before 9, Ceci and I went to Goodwill and
picked up some painting clothes and headed to "the wall"

and met LaMont DeJONG ('63) and Bob COTTRILL ('63) to start the
base coat over 50 years worth of pealing paint and graffitti...
what a mess... we carefully peeled several samples off as
souvenirs and just started on the business of recreating
history... a short time later Dean HEILING ('63) and Anita
CLEAVER ('63) arrived and Dean and I accepted a nickel from each
of the others as a retainer and began preparing a "join defense
agreement"... as more people arrived we received much support
such as "Wow that looks great!" and "You missed a spot."... "The
white is mixing into the green and gold."... all important to a
venture such as this one... at this point we tried to compile a
true account of the "first painting"... I believe there are 27
versions (all verified on SNOPES) of how the original wall was
painted... I can say that at least half the class claimed to
have been there on that famous night while the rest of the class
was attending a B-ball game in the gym... so I'm sure we have
"the rest of the story"... at 1 we had finished the "63" and all
of the green. LaMont did the "63" freehand with the help of a
transparency Bob had with him... by then my lunch dates had
arrived and I was put to the task of cleaning the evidence off
my feet, hands, arms and legs and left the motto to Dean to
finish... I still feel very badly about leaving the wet rag in
Ellen's car where I believe it molded over night... PeeeeUuuuuu!
(Thanks to Shirley COLLINGS Haskins ('66} for sending the
painting picture in [see link above. -Maren])... Ellen, Ceci,
Numbers 32 ('63) and 10 ('64), ML and I headed to Anthony's for
a bite to eat. Kippy and Leo WEBB ('63) joined us there. Just
before the main course arrived I managed to spill a very large
glass of Iced tea all over ML and myself... ML just wiped me off
(remember how yer mom would spit on a Kleenex and clean you up?)
and told me I was a "good boy"...
The Friday night Taco Fest was fabulous! You would have thought
the entire class was there the place was so packed. If I even
tried to mention half the people I saw I'd still miss way too
many to take the chance. I did enjoy watching John CAMPBELL
('63) trying to blow up his Bomber-float tho... I can only
suggest; "don't try this at home"... does anybody else wonder
when he's gonna spring for his own car and stop driving Grama's?
I do have to mention tho that I had a nice talk with Dick
BOEHNING ('63), during which he made me understand the solemnity
of the memorial service and its importance... he changed my mind
about skipping it right then and there... If I am not wrong, I
believe that Myrna BOLIN ('63) was the only one picked up that
night by the cops... it seems the Rent-a-Wreck she got for the
weekend came without tail lights... at least that's what she
told the cop.
Saturday morning was Spuddies again at 9 this time. Good crowd
for nice chats. Joe FORD ('63) and his bike gang showed up and
reenacted the "Wild One"... I don't recall Marlon Brando wearing
quite the same attire... A bunch of us went to a winery for
lunch... a little pricey but not as bad when we realized they
had tacked on a 35% toke (Vegas slang for tip)... made Ann ENGEL
Schafer's ('63) nails turn a rather florescent green... Because
I felt that it would be bad form for an underclassman to attend
the dinner, I didn't sign up and to save time, Ceci and I
decided to stay at the DI for dinner... BIG mistake... really
big mistake... 'nuff said... The program was about as nice as
I've ever heard. Jimbeaux ('63) was plagued with technical
difficulties, but he was about as swave and deboner as they
come... did you know his Daddy worked at the Hanford Plant? He
was a Postulator, as I recall. By the way, if anyone is looking
for a green football helmet missing a chin strap but sporting
the bomb and the cloud contact Dick BOEHNING at BEachwood 45789.
The letter from Frank OSGARD ('63WB) was very touching and full
of those memories I mentioned at the beginning of this
epistle... Larry WERSEN ('63) failed to remember his panano so
the Chessmen did not provide the music as I was lead to believe
and was one of the selling points of the weekend for me... but
at least, Mary Ann WEILAND ('63) did take me aside for a little
ron de voo (French for "Oh Baby you know what I like!") to show
me that picture that has haunted me for so long... After a long
nite we retired to the "girls" room for a little football with
Jim HOUSE ('63) and David SIMPSON ('63) on Dave's phone... ML
made big bucks off her daughter on the Cougs... can you imagine
taking money from a child on a football bet?... me neither...
The memorial breakfast was beyond words. It was at that point
that I managed to spill a nice big glass of water all over Dave
SIMPSON... arrrrrrrrrrrrgh... Bill WILSON's ('63) words were
inspiring and sobering. Even George BARNETT ('63) didn't squirm
(Thanks George for the kind offer to gimme a ride back to
Vegas). LaMont braved the Columbia waters to throw the wreath in
memory of those who have gone before. Thank you Class of '63 for
letting this little kid sit at the Big Kids' table one more time!

I remember saving coins in a coin folder and taking them to
Spalding to deposit in our savings account. Both my brother, Jim
COLLINGS (’62), and I were able to purchase new bikes.
Re: Shots
Also, I recall lining up across the stage and throughout the
auditorium to receive shots from nurses at the back of the
auditorium. As I always felt faint with receiving shots, I would
lay down on a cot. However, when I was in the 3rd grade I walked
back to the classroom to get my jacket from the coat closet to
go outside to recess after receiving a shot and woke up on the
floor of the coat closet with the other children and Mrs. Drake
looking down at me after I fainted. That wasn't a good memory!!!

took a terrible fall Friday and got a real bad head injury. She
was flown to Harborview Medical in Seattle. The doctors do not
think she will wake up and they are doing comfort care for her

Re: '63 Reunion Reflections
I would like to add my name to the thank you list to the
BOEHNINGs and all who helped on the reunion. Everyone I met was
having a good time. I regret not having more time to talk with
classmates who I hadn't talked to for so very long. The Marcus
Whitman gathering was like a 60 year time warp. Good talking
to the girls I was too shy to talk to then, and also my old
neighbor Richard DAVIES who lived 2 doors up Birch. What a great
gang. Another big thanks to Jim HAMILTON who did a good job tap
dancing while the audio visual crew worked to fix stuff. Maybe
Kenny WRIGHT took out too many tubes or was that Morley Paul's
class? The B reactor tour was very interesting and let me put a
"face" to all the things my dad couldn't talk about. Thanks to
everyone who dropped by the bomb pit (BRACKENBUSH/CAMPBELL
rooms) for a post event pick-me-up. I hope we didn't keep that
kid next door, Jerry TAYLOR, up too late. Unfortunate that some
of "our friends" such as Jim ARMSTRONG and John DALE couldn't
make it. I was hoping to take them for a ride around Zip's in
the old Chevy listening to the Fabulous Wailers. Have we
officially adopted David RIVERS ('65) yet? Come on ... anyone
who has Rat Fink and bomb tattoos... Hope everyone got home OK.

Re: Sad news (NAB)
The man killed in the plane crash near Big Lake in Alaska Monday
shortly after noon, was Michael Whedbee, Jackie's brother. A
pilot of many years experience he loved to fly so much that he
built his own plane and has flown it all over central California
and central Alaska. The ranch they purchased a couple of years
ago has a beautiful hangar and an FAA registered airstrip. Mike
was terminal with cancer and wanted to get as much air time as
possible while he was still able.
Jackie and I had just gotten home at 1 AM Monday from Sioux
Falls, SD, where we attended the 4 days of annual meetings of
the National Fireworks Association. I put her on an Alaska
Flight to Anchorage, Monday evening.
Michael died instantly. It is my personal feeling that the gods
choose to save him from a predicted painful death. Jackie has
now lost her Father, an infant son, and her brother, in
accidental death in Alaska. Please remember her in your prayers.
As soon as arrangements are made I will fly up to be with her. I
am preparing for a large display Saturday the 14th that I cannot
get out of.

Re: Club 40
The 26th annual Club 40 was a huge success. It was great getting
back to the Shilo, where the Club was born in the Yakima Room in
1987. The banquet room is larger and has daylight windows on the
West side, much more enjoyable than our other venues.
The Friday night party was a great meet and greet, and all most
behaved themselves. The Class of 1953 was honored for their 60th
anniversary, and were well represented.
Saturday night was calm and laid back till the band began.
The Class of 1953 was separated by the Dance floor and the
President's table from the rest of us, I expect to prevent a
messy food fight. The band was loud and vigorous, just not
suited for old folks like me. It had a peculiar beat, bob bob-
bop, which threw the dancers off some. Was that hip hop? I
dunno.
We left about nine and wandered into the bar, where the Class
of 1973 was holding forty. How they got 150 folks in there
including the deck is beyond me. We looked for Karen SULLIVAN ('73),
knowing her folks very well. She was too busy, just giving us a
wink. We did have a nice talk with a fine young man named Greg
ALLEY ('73). I have know him for fifty years, back when I worked
in Richland. His Dad was one of my best friends, a super nice
guy, with a strange, but full sense of humor. He attended
Lebanon, OR schools and OSC, but I did not hold that against
him. Greg is the oldest of nine kids, and his mother was a
Saint, having cared for all those kids and Dad. Both of those
wonderful parents are gone now. Greg said he thought he should
join Club 40. I totally agree.
The Founders group luncheon held on the Saturday of Club40 was a
big success, but down a little. I suspect some were up at the
Red Lion looking for us. Also, we learned that Joe WOOD ('48-RIP)
had passed. Others were at a wedding, it seems. Ida and I don't
attend many weddings anymore, just funerals. They are depressing,
but no gifts.

On the 10th, I managed to forget to post an HB for Donna
FREDETTE ('65), but she sweetly accepted my apology... it was
right there on my yellow stickie... but now days I need to
look at both the yellow stickie AND the big ol' calendar on my
computer... life's tough (not to be confused with "tuff" as in
Bomber babes like Donna)... now for today's b-day dude, I've
knowed him a way long time along with his folks ('65-'67 and
'69)... It was because of this guy that the '65ers stopped
eating breakfast at the Shilo... ya see... they serve booze in
the dining room at night... so one year they decided this kid
couldn't eat breakfast with us... guess they thought we might
stay late or somthin'... who knows... I've only been back once
cuz a buncha kids were going there on Sunday after an event
so I guess HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) and I need a scolding for that
infraction, even tho this guy has been old enough to join us
for a while... man time does fly... he'll be coming to Vegas
for Drag racing school at the end of the month... that's good
because last weekend I never did catch up to him and his ma and
pa except when they came to heckle us working stiffs painting
the wall... I figure the unofficial-official photographer, David
HANTHORN ('63) has got his pichers all suitable fer framing by
now... Funny... I was gonna call my "post-event-post", "Where's
Pitts", but since there were so many faces I missed I figured it
was best to go with the memory thing... I mean everbody likes
Dino... Sorry about the breakdown man... we missed you! If you
will indulge me, there is one more little tale I gotta tell...
It was the nite of the dinner and all thru the DI not a creature
was stirring, not even I... I had bagged the kerchief and the
cap but had just settled down for a pre-event nap... when all
of a sudden there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed
to see what was the matter... and there on the lawn (instead
of in the courtyard as I expected) was a gaggle of Gold Medal
Bombers trying to get their pictures taken on this itty bitty
scaffold... now I book a river-side room when I stay at the DI
(and I only stay there when "upper-class-Bomber-babes" make me)
because the courtyard can get noisy (Mary Ann WEILAND ('63)
will attest to that)... and where do they put this gang? Right
outside my door... the comedy of watching all those kids trying
to balance on that thing was beyond belief! Of course there's
always "one" and Donna BOWERS ('63) was the one to take a
special seat on the lawn rather than on that accident waiting
to happen... good move, girl! so now I wanna say HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Steven ADAIR ('08) on your special day, September 13, 2013!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess a new skateboard for
a present ain't the big deal it once was, huh?

Re: Passing of Aaron Lee GUNTER ('70 Honorary)
Aaron was born December 2, 1950, and passed away on September 8,
2013. He attended Jason Lee, Chief Jo and Col-Hi. However, he
left after his junior year so he didn't actually graduate with
the class of '70 even though he is on the class roster.
His memorial services will be from 2pm to 3pm on Friday,
September 13, 2013, at Memories at Sunset Event Center in

Re: Adoption of Rivers:
You fine young people in the class of '63 have opened up a can
of worms by proposing the adoption of one David RIVERS ('65). I
think you are really causing a lot of trouble. Sure he's sorta
cute in his Bomber jammies, but he's hardly house-broken, and
definitely not safe to take in public even on a leash. The next
thing you know he'll be wanting other classes to adopt him, and
heaven knows we can't afford him. Let him stay with his own
class even though they are probably the ones behind this idea.

Re: GMC '63 fifty year reunion photos
Well I TRIED to send in my photos to the Sandstorm, but just
couldn't make things work (guess that's what happens when you
are old enough to have been to your fifty year HS reunion). So
anyway, I posted them on FaceBook. Linda ('63, and the BEST
reunion chairman ever) managed to get them all transferred to
the "Richland Bombers from the Class of '63" Facebook page, AND
tagged almost everybody's name too. Just MORE of the yeoman work
she does to make the GMC of '63 the BEST there is! So there they
are right on FaceBook for your viewing pleasure. Got an email
from Linda earlier that said (among many astounding facts about
the GMC of '63) that we had 149 classmates and 84 guests at the
reunion. What a great group of kids. We were all eighteen again
for the weekend. By the way, if you are feeling lonely and your
email inbox has been empty for too long, just try posting a
couple of hundred class reunion photos on FB. Every single time
someone "tags", "likes" or "comments" on a picture, YOU get an
email!! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate every single one of
them, but it does get a little overwhelming! *grin* So anyway,
this is to wrap up the small part I played in the reunion. As I
told someone on FB, taking the pictures and posting them on FB
wasn't work, it was a "labor of love". I, for one, had a blast
at the reunion, and can't wait for the next one. Love ya, GMC!!

Re: Colorado flooding
Like everyone else, I have been watching my beloved second home
state of Colorado destroyed by numerous rivers overflowing
their banks after being hammered by 12" - 18” of torrential,
unprecedented rainfall. I was there after the previous floods
which included the Big Thompson flood that killed hundreds
and destroyed much of Estes Park and washed down the valley on
Highway 34 to Loveland taking with it many people, campers, cars
and homes. That was the largest disaster in the history of the
state. An area of land the size of Connecticut is affected this
time. I just heard that at least 19,000 homes were damaged or
destroyed.
Fort Collins, Loveland, Longmont, Jamestown, Boulder, Estes Park
(where we have our cabin), Greeley and other towns throughout
Boulder, Weld, Larimer and other counties are suffering through
their own version of our hated hurricane Katrina. I had no
contact with relatives, neighbors and friends until Saturday
afternoon. All communications and utilities were pretty much
totally out. My son and I were heading to Estes Park, CO, to
check/work on our place in late September. Guess the guardian
angels were watching out for us! Luckily, none of our relatives,
neighbors or friends (or us) were flooded or hurt. Has anyone
heard from Michael WAGGONER ('60), a fellow Bomber, in Boulder?
It is unbelievable that the Big Thompson, St. Vrain, South
Platte, and other rivers could merge to inflict such havoc. The
Platte is usually nothing more than a dinky stream most of the
time.
Does anyone know of fellow classmates who were adversely
impacted by this disaster?
I'm pretty sure Louisiana will rise to the occasion to help
insomuch as everyone rushed in to help us during Katrina. In
Estes Park, flood info and numerous photos/videos are online and
at http://www.eptrail.com/
Hope everyone will consider giving to the victims through
various charities.
Shootings, floods, fires... what else could go wrong? Guess my
homeowners insurance rates there will start doing the same thing
that they did in Louisiana after Katrina.

new life into the candle business all on her own. I ran this by
Frank Osgard and he "postulated" that she'll be some 242 years

In talking with the duly elected representative for The Class
of '54 to the Club 40 Board of Directors, Jim MEFFORD ('54), I
was assured that he was going to do his best to round up members
of The Class of '54 whom we have not seen in a very long time.
Some of them did not make the 50 year reunion some nine years
back. He, and other members of The Class of '54 present, would
really like to see any or all of The Class of '54 at the
upcoming 60 year reunion. I believe it will be held at the same
time as the annual Club 40 meeting. Plans are in the fomenting
stage and will probably be discussed at Marilyn's next ice-cream
social. So, look out for either an e-mail or a snail mail (or
even both) from Jim MEFFORD. He has ways of finding your
whereabouts.
On an entirely different matter; Monday evening I watched OPB's
broadcast of "Hanford" as a part of their "Oregon Experience"
program. It was factual, and not overly pro or con on the Bomb
or the clean-up. If you get the chance, watch it. You might even
see a familiar face or two.

Been tied up in the Arbitration of my last case and we've been
doing 12 hour days to get it finished... just got a minute to
wish an HB to an old friend (I can say that about guys)... it
was my sophomore year and I was struggling through Mr. Briggs'
Spanish class and mostly flirting with Darlene ('64) so I could
hardly be expected to actually learn to speak another language
when I was busy with the language of LUV! My older half brother
was living with us when a group of new students (new to school
and new to the US) came into our midst... the B-day guy looked
to me to be about the same height as Dave SIMPSON ('63), Brian
JOHNSON ('65) and Jim HOUSE ('63; number 32 in your program), as
I had stopped growing at 6' at the age of 12... my half brother
spoke Spanish fluently and quickly made friends with the new
arrivals which gave me a bit of an in as well... what a great
opportunity to learn from others and to experience in a small
way what it is like to be forced to leave one's homeland under
less than happy circumstances. I am glad I had the opportunity
even though we have lost until the advent of Face book... since
that time we've been able to share a little now and then...

If you go to a Bomber basketball game and hang around the
concession lobby looking at all of the old Bomber team pictures,
all of those picture frames were made from the bleachers that
were removed from the old original gym, or as we called it,
Jim's Gym (HOUSE ('63)).

If you are referring to the "old original gym", I don't think
Mr. HOUSE ('63) played a game in it. The original gym at Col-Hi
was a uniquely wooden affair with bleachers on one side only.
When I went to school, it was referred to as the "girl's gym";
the place where most of the mixers took place. It was much
smaller than the new, or "boy's" gym just to the south [with
metal bleachers]. This was the gym until the Dawald gym was
built, and was part of the first modification to the Corps of
Engineers plan.
It is possible that the frames were made from bleacher seats
from the original gym when the third modification came along.
I believe parts of that gym were also used in "memorial" pens
or pencils.

How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb? One... he
holds the bulb and the world turns around him... How can you
tell if a lawyer is lying? His mouth is moving... ah but when
yer breakin' the law vandalizing city property... ain't it nice
to know you got a couple on retainer? Or in this case... onna
ladder next to ya! Over the years I've wished this guy an HB
more by knowin' him thru Jimbeaux ('63) than by bein' old time
buds, but this summer I had the pleasure of really rubbin'
elbows with him and what fun that was... now I will admit that
our elbows wuz covered in green and gold paint (or as Jimbeaux
calls it parking bumper yeller)... my cut-offs are still bearing
the evidence where I musta wiped my hands off... speaking of the
Oracle (the ever young and lovely Miss Nancy ('65) reminded me
that he self appointed himself that a few years back) I have
been chastised for the last few dayz fer missin' birthdays of a
few celeberties... the first was never one of my favorites...
he along with Annette did a buncha beach blanket movies... but
Frankie and Annette weren't may main reasons for watchin' them
fine flicks... I always dug those movies cuz a guy who would
become a good buddy in later years was in them... Norm Grabowski
(NAB RIP), the father of the T-bucket (the Kookie Car) was in
them and of course who could forget Eric VonZipper! I hope this
doesn't offend... but at Spalding alla guys were in love with
Annette... we didn't hava a TV and even when we did we didn't
get the Mickey Mouse Club... but when I first saw her on someone
else's TV I was shocked and Awed... I was sure she hadda
stache... not my type... Doloris Hart (nka Rev. Mother), the
girl in the Elvis movies was way more my style... tho admittedly
not a Bomber-babe... I hadn't reached Bomber-age when I fell for
her (I hadn't even reached Mary Lou Watkins' ('63) age... I was
still in my Patty WATERS ('65 WB) and Cheryl WEAVER ('65) stage
at that point)... now the second time this week he got on my
case I was totally in the wrong... I had forgotten to mention
Bill Medley's 73nd b-day... now that was almost a sin... I
seldom missed seeing Bill and Bobby when they played my little
town and have continued to see Bill often... I had met Paul
Revere, Mark Lindsay during my short stay in Camas my Jr. year
and became reacquainted with them in the very early '70s in
Vegas... PR always opened for the Righteous Brothers and still
opens for Bill... in fact, Bill's son is the latest Mark
replacement... anyway, when PR would spot me in the audience
he used to look for my daughter, Sarah, and when he'd see her
always plopped a three cornered hat on her head... it just made
her evening... tho she's 38 years old, she still has one or two
of those hats... so where wuz I... oh yes... what do you call
1000 layers at the bottom of the ocean... nah... that's not

In all the excitement about gymnasiums and the like I forgot
two (2) very important birthdays. These are two (2) Bomber Babes

beanie to honor Ann CLATWORTHY and Treasure ELDER (both of The

figured out exactly when it was shot. From New York trade
papers announcing the film showing to the wet streets

record, even when the cars were registered. It was filmed
only four days before the Great California Earthquake of
April 18th 1906 and shipped by train to NY for
processing. Amazing, but true!"

I think I mentioned in the Sandstorm before we got TV in 1955,
but now I think it was probably 1954 because I remember the
Republican and Democrat Presidential conventions coming on and
to a 9 year old kid that just ruined two weeks of television. In
Athena, Oregon we could get only CBS and NBC, then later we got
ABC, but it did not start until something like 2:00 pm. ABC had
"The Mickey Mouse Club" and I thought Annette really stood out,
although as a 10 year old I had not yet discovered girls--and
still haven't figured out women. I saw Frankie and Annette in
Yakima on their tour just before it was announced she had MS. I
remember Frankie talking about the Beach Party movies saying,
"What stories! What plots!" To which she replied, "What stories?
What plots?"
Before I knew "The Mickey Mouse Club" was a TV show I had a
Mickey Mouse Club comic book. As far as I can remember it had
nothing to do with what was on the show, but is was about 1/4
inch thick square bound back. and the main story was Mickey as a
detective with "The Phantom Blot" his protagonist, a figure all
dressed in black (not Johnny Cash), who kept leaving Mickey in
booby traps. I got it used and it had the front cover torn off.
Don't know what happened to that comic book as I kept my comic
books and now have a stack about 10" tall mostly in quite good
condition. I had looked for that comic book before on the
internet with no success until today. It was called "The Mickey
Mouse Club Parade" issue #1, I don't know if there was ever a
#2. I found it for sale from $11.50 to $750.00.
I got the biggest kick out of Eric Von Zipper in the Beach Party
movies. Lately I have been watching him on "The Phil Silvers
Show" or as I call it "Sgt. Bilko." (Yeah, all this new TV and
most of what I watch is old stuff). I remember seeing Norm
Grabowski and checked out his filmography, I must have seen well
over half of the movies/TV he was in, but didn't know he built
cars. On "Counting Cars" I saw a T-bucket with two V8 engines--
side-by-side. Since it is from your area, I'm guessing you have
actually seen it. Someone here in Kennewick built a car, maybe
a Buick, very early '30s with two in-line V8s. Only saw it up
close once. He said he built it mostly out of parts left over
from a restoration project(s).
You educated me on Deloris Hart, I did not think she had been
in an Elvis movie. I had only seen her in "Where the Boys Are"
and "Sail a Crooked Ship." I remember seeing the previews for
"Francis of Assisi" at probably the Uptown theater, but did not
see that movie until less than a year ago. She was in "King
Creole" with Elvis, but I don't think I have ever seen that one.
Elvis Presley made 31 movies, of course some say he only made
one movie; he just did it 31 times. Some years ago I came across
a website about the girls of the Elvis movies. Sure were a lot
of them who were unknown at the time, but are well known today.
Somewhere around 1990 Paul Revere and the Raiders played the
Benton Franklin Fair twice two or three years apart. That guy
sure knows how to put on a show. The first time it was raining,
and the second time it was amazing to me how much he remembered
about the first time. (Maybe I should say the last time because
he was here a lot in the '60s). He remembered the rain and even
that they were wearing the white costumes at the time. For
someone who entertains as much as he does, I would think that
stuff would all run together in someone's mind. Yeah, he made
some three corner hat jokes too.

Re: Bomb drills at Carmichael.
I recall that we had attack drills at Carmichael Junior High
when I was there. We all went out in the hall, laid down with
ouR heads to the lockers, head on one arm and the other arm over
the back of your neck and then just lay there. It bothered a lot
of people but I found it relaxing to be out of class and a good
time to take another nap. Then too, the janitor, or sorry, the
Senior Building Maintenance and Repair Engineer, did not have to
sweep the floors for a week.
All of this hysteria about an A-Bomb attack really hit some
people hard. We had some friends in the Magnolia district of
Seattle when I lived there and they built a real bomb shelter in
their basement. When completed, they had a christening party and
as luck would have it, I found this poster, in Vegas I think,
that had the "8 positions to take in case of a bomb attack." In
color too. Positions 1 through 7 was something like, "...get in
the shelter, get under a table, pull your right leg over head
and left arm over that, the same with the left leg and right arm
until your head is completely down and covered..." The last
step, Step 8, on the list was "...kiss you bum good bye..." if
you can picture all of this. She was so affronted that she never
talked to me again, which was even better than surviving a bomb
attack.
Re: School savings program
I started down at L & C Grade School and it was something like
a nickel or dime a month, maybe a week. I could not wait to
see my new balance in the book we were given by Seattle First
National Bank. I upped it to a quarter a week when my parents
jumped my weekly allowance and in the summer when I watered
lawns, later mowing them too for more bucks, for vacationers for
$5.00 a week (huge money in those days), I would put $3.00 a
yard into this account. I saved in that account all through
junior high because I was so cheap, sorry, frugal, then (and
still am) but I didn't tell anyone at school because I did not
want them to think I was still a Grade School Savings Account
geek.
Long story short, I kind of forgot the account during high
school and college years and even into my early married years.
One day I was visiting my friendly local banker at Seafirst in
Magnolia (Seattle) and he said "...are you the same William C.
K. A. Berlin, III, formerly of Richland, WA...?" By then I had
shortened my name so that people would think I was an adult and
not some dog show entry, so I said "yes" and he said that the
bank had an "unclaimed" savings account in my name. Sure as
hell, sorry, heck (the Sandstorm is a family publication, what),
it was mine and with interest over all of those years there was
over $735 in it. What to do with this windfall? Buy new clothes?
Go on an expensive holiday? Nah. We bought a 24 cubic foot
freezer to put all of our Alaska frozen food and long past
relatives in. You all know how it is in those very early
practical "family years." Needs come first.

can you teach kids to save when investing in a retail
marijuana shop will pay huge returns?

dang... double dang! I'm gonna suggest that Dennis HAMMER ('64)

For the last week or two I have been looking for an envelope of
decals I swore I put inna file cabinet... finally fessed up to
the guy was seeking them for that they were lost forever...
then this morning I opened a drawer in a little table and there
they were... just as I was preparing to have a buncha new ones
made... I figure just after Dennis opens the envelope for his
new book, he'll stumble on the one he had years ago! This
"old age" stuff can be a little aggravating... I can remember
Richland as tho it was yesterday (I remember riding the train
back to Iowa during the flood tho my mother always said I was
too young to remember) but can't remember crap from a week
ago! I am happy to report, however, that I have no problem
remembering the three b-day guys for this little post. One I
haven't seen in years but would sure love to... maybe he'll make
it to the '65er 50 year in '15... we'll see... the other two
began celebrating their b-days together, as they found they had
a lot in common in later years... One made it and one finally
succumbed last year but both are totally special to me... I
remember the year I went to the dollar store and filled two
huge bags with every silly item I could find and then went over
to the Octopuses Garden and got them dead head shirts (well I
think that's what I got) for a joint party in Richland... hadda
ball with the survivor at his 50 year reunion a few weeks ago
and can't wait to see him and a buncha others at the chowder
whatchamacallit in Olympia in December! HAPPY BIRTHDAY Jim

Mrs. Clement was born August 29, 1920 and passed away August 31,
2013. There will be a grave side service at 11:30 on Saturday,
September 28, at Sunset Memorial Garden in Richland with a
memorial service celebrating her life following the memorial at
12:30 at First Baptist Church located at 1107 Wright Ave. You

My family didn't get a TV until the summer of 1958, just before
I started ninth grade. I watched it from the time I got up in
the morning until it signed off at night with the National
Anthem, flag and jet planes, including soap operas and
everything.
In the afternoon there was a locally produced homemaker's show
for the Yakima-Richland-Walla Walla "network". It originated in
Yakima. The hostess announced a recipe contest, so I sent in a
recipe for Waldorf Cake (made with Miracle White instead of eggs
and whatever) that my 8th grade math teacher had given us. It
won. My dad drove us to Yakima where we had lunch at a very nice
restaurant (the cake for dessert came with sparklers), a tour of
the TV station including watching the filming of a commercial,
and then my 15 minutes of fame baking my cake on TV. One girl
called and said she enjoyed it. I still have the Junior Cookbook
I was given somewhere.
Other than baking that cake, I only know how to scramble eggs,
make soup (from a Campbell's can), and fix peanut butter and
jelly sandwiches (which is what I lived on for breakfast and
lunch for three years at Whitman College; my parents made me eat
dinner in the dining room so I'd have one good meal a day. I
weighed 108 pounds when I graduated.

That was a great reel on San Francisco from 1905 or so. Lots of
hats, right hand drive cars and smart-ass kids challenging the
street car [and more than one ADULT ran in front of the street
car, too. -Maren]. Looks like it was down Market Street with
the ferry Terminal at the base.
My maternal Grandmother was born and raised in San Francisco,
one of six kids. He father was a teamster, not the Union but a
guy who drives horses attached to a wagon, that delivered fairly
heavy cargo or bulk items like coal. He must have done pretty
well as he had five teams working and he bought some very rural
property over on the East Bay, around where Albany, CA, now
stands, for summer adventures. When the earthquake hit SFO (the
airline code for San Francisco) it tore apart my Grandmother's
family apartment and then it caught fire and they lost
everything. Great Grandfather Algren, being the tough Norwegian
that he was, took three teams and wagons on the ferry to the
summer place, picked up three tents and brought them back to SFO
where the family lived in them for two and a half years. They
were set up in what was then a park west of the city center in
what is now the Lakes District. Great Grandmum Algren fed over
50 people a meal because there were so many without any thing
to eat or a place to cook it. That lasted two months.
My Grandmother Margetts (nee Algren) was a big woman at six-
feet tall, large boned and very strong, even at a young age so
she turned out to help her father and two brothers locate people
in the wreckage. The also scrounged for food to keep up their
impromptu "soup kitchen" which had grown now to over a hundred
meals a day. They even moved out of one of their three tents so
that a family of eight could have a cover over their heads. Her
description of the earthquake and resulting fire was documented
on what we now call a coffee table picture book that she had and
I was fascinated with it all and read it cover to cover several
times.
In about 1946, just before we moved to Richland, my grandmother
took me up to SFO from where they lived in Los Gatos at the
time, and took me around to the places she described during that
terrible time. She was tough, hardened but gentle and not bitter
and that was clearly a sign of that generation. They recovered
on their own and with their own money, nothing from government,
not so much as a dime. All of this delayed her education by
three years but she did finish high school and a couple of years
of university before getting married to my Grandfather Margetts,
who was really a piece of work.
Grandpa Frank had his own story but always deferred to
Grandmother Anna's heroics. They were a Mutt and Jeff couple.
She towered over him by several inches given his small stature.
He was a shanty Irishman from Chicago's south side, his resume
was boxer, lawyer (3 weeks to degree), Court Reporter (3 days
to degree), Baptist Minister (9 months), Chiropractor (1 year),
vineyard operator and herring fisherman, at various times in
his life. Their individual histories just infatuated me because
it was so different from what I had known then and now. Those
pictures from SFO brought back a lot of memories even though I
had not been there.
-Bill BERLIN ('56) ~ Anacortes, WA where the ultra heavy rain
nearly washed out the annual Oyster Run this past
weekend. Only about 10,000 motorcycles showed up when
we usually have 17 to 18,000. The tough of the tough
showed up, so to speak.

pink and black clothes was the fad and oh what a real gone time
we had, when we had, those rock-a-billy ways, way back in the
pink n black days... thanks, Narvel... all this talk about first
TVs and all gets me goin'... we got ours in 1958... what I
remember is radio... now I know it was fun to listen to Matt
Dillon (William Conrad), the Whistler, Johnny Dollar and all the
rest... our music stations were all what they would call Hill
Billy or at least that's what I recall... I mean if ya wanted
to call 'em "county"... they'd be DEEP country... Bob Wills was
still the King in them days... we watched the drive in on out
houses and just had a danged good ol' time... I remember winning
a record from some call in... my Dad musta taken me to the
station to pick it up... it was a 45... Hank Locklin singin'
"Sally Was A Good Ol' Girl"... he was best known for "Please
Help Me I'm Fallin'". Keith PETERSON ('65) spent hours trying
to find a rock 'n' roll song on my short wave... we'd surf
half the night tho we didn't know we wuz surfin' at the time...
I think our TV got one channel, but I have forgotten that
particular fact... While at Spalding we lived on the corner
of Salem and Acacia... behind us on Birch was Butch MANTHEI
('65)... his Dad, Mike, was the only adult (except my dad) I
knew hadda first name... for some reason everybody knew Mike...
I know they got more channels... they had what looked like a
modern day cell tower on their roof and could pull in all kindsa
stations... it made the water tower look small... Man those wuz
the good ol' dayz... Today, we gotta Bomber-babe I just saw the
other day and a guy I met in 10th grade... Living across from
the babe and her sisters ('60; '65) was about one a the coolest
moves my Pop ever made... talk about fun... I'm sure every part
of town had its gatherin' places but I shore am glad to have
spent so many years across from this one... I mean the park was
great and served us well at night... but during the days of

Street heading towards the Ferry building; look close and you
can see me with a pack of newspapers under my arm, running
across the busy street dodging the trolley cars.

I am always amazed at the tough and “true grit!” our
grandparents and others exhibited in times of upheaval and
traumatic events of their times. Your account of your
grandparents at the time of the SFO great earthquake and
thereafter was truly remarkable!
One of my grandfathers - when he was a young man - was a sheep
herder, I believe in Idaho, was caught in an arroyo by a flash
flood where he had to get off his horse and scramble up the
ravine to save himself and lost his horse and most of the flock
of sheep, or so his story goes, which I tend to believe. My
other grandfather left college due to his health, caught the
first steamer out of Seattle for Alaska and spent the whole
summer panning for gold with a friend, returning on the last
boat out of Alaska just in time, and just about breaking even,
but with a multitude of adventures and improved health. I’m
always amazed at these stories.

Re: Bleacher Feature
I ran into the Richland High athletic director and Steve NEIL
('72) at Howard Amon Park today. NEIL was principal at Richland
for 8 years during the boy’s gym restoration. Both of them
confirmed that the picture frames in the present gym lobby were
made from wood taken from the "boys'" gym. The bleachers were
metal but the seats were made of wood. The demolition contractor
was nice enough to donate some of the wooden bleachers for the
frames. They also took pieces of the floor and sold them for
souvenirs. The center jump circle was cut out and is still in
the athletic director's office.
The wooden bleachers in the old original gym were too old and
brittle to salvage anything so nothing was done with them. I
also remember dancing in P.E. in that original small gym.
I mentioned Jim's Gym (HOUSE ('63) because '63 was such a good
year. It could have been Stein's ('64), Wallace's ('63), Pook's
('63), Webb's ('64), etc., etc. They were a terrific team and a
blast to watch. They took 3rd at State but they cudda and shudda
won it all. (Stupid Garfield!).
Now, if someone can just provide proof that the Uptown Theater
NEVER had a balcony, we can clear that debate up once and for
all.

Thank you for clearing up the frame matter.
To the best of my knowledge, none of the theaters in Richland or
North Richland had balconies. The Richland and the Village were
built to a Corps of Engineers plan for a small post theater. The
North Star (North Richland) was built to some other plan which
included a large open area between the stage/screen and front
row of seats. The Uptown was built later to someone else's
plan which did not include a balcony. What may have given the
impression of a balcony was the projection booth, which extended
over the back rows.
However, I think two of the four theaters in Kennewick and Pasco
had balconies. These would have been the closest ones.
Hope this confuses the issue.

Re: Theaters
My father was manager of the theater in Pasco around 1934 (when
I was born) for a few years, owned by a family-run corporation
out of Yakima (Mercy Theaters). I am quite sure it had a balcony
and loge seats. It also had a basement with band stand and dance
floor, and a big event was a weekly dance with live music held
there each Saturday.
I really enjoyed those old theaters. Dad later managed the one
in Walla Walla, and I recall seeing "Gone with the Wind" on its
original run (1940-41?). As the manager's "kid", I just walked
in - got free popcorn - sat where I wanted! Ha!

Yeah, I know... not that funny but I couldn't resist... growing
up for a while at Spalding was a real trip... I was just getting
old enough to wanna be cool and was surrounded by total cool...
everywhere... my fifth grade class was filled with about the
coolest kids I ever met... problem was... many of them would
soon be going to another school... the B-day guy and his younger
brother, "the Walk" ('63) would go to the same school I would,
however... we won't get into which Jr. Hi was cooler... since
both were full of cool kids... that says it all (Go Warriors...
oooops... sorry)... Since "The Walk" was closer to my age I
would get to know him well... but the b-day guy was more of...
"a name"... the kind ya whisper when they come around... well
ya do if yer a little kid and they are close to legend... In
those days we really looked up to guys like this one... style,
class and total cool... what more could ya ask in Heroes! As
time went by I came to know this guy, too, and still consider
him one of those guys I will always look up to... but at least
I'm not afraid to give him a big bear hug every time we meet...

Re: Wedding of two long experienced pyrotechnicians
Jackie L. Whedbee and J. Larry MATTINGLY ('60) recited wedding
vows that they had written, on the afternoon of September 28,
2013. The ceremony was held at the estate of Larry's brother,
Mark, and his wife Stacey. Standing up for them were Ann Fisher
and Ken Julian. Ann is Jackie's best friend, and Ken is Larry's
co-founder of Entertainment Fireworks.
Jackie is the owner of Aurora Pyrotechnics in Alaska and has
been doing displays for 35 years. 4th of July, 2013, was Larry's
55th anniversary of the first display he was in charge of in
1958.
Due to nearly 2-inches of torrential rain and high winds, the
planned outdoor wedding was held indoors and fireworks were
limited to numerous candles indoors. The 18 guests were close
friends and relatives. The wedding was watched on Skype by
Larry's grand-daughter and her husband from Amherst, NY.
For the present the couple will maintain Jackie's company in
Alaska and house in Anchorage, and Larry's home near Tacoma, WA
and his VP position at EFI.
My daughter Sandra came over from Honolulu and my brothers,
Mike ('77) and Mark ('77) and their wives were wonderful in
helping us get through this. Mark's wife, Stacey, really went
all out getting things ready, then moving it indoors. We had
two pop-up canopies and buckets of flowers in my van ready to
decorate the gazebo and have a beautiful outdoor wedding in the
shadow of towering firs on plush lawns.
Fortunately we did some advance planning due to dire warnings on
the Weather Net. So we knew what furniture to move and where to
put things and they made it look easy.
We had an ordained minister officiate the ceremony. Joe Hibard
is the Chaplain of the Tacoma Fire Department and several Law
Enforcement agencies.
The wind howled and the rain poured and we got through the
ceremony in a few minutes and the party was as good as they get.
My business partner, Ken, did a really nice champagne toast. We
had prepared lots food. Plates of deviled eggs, several kinds
of salad, skewered moose meat with blueberries were hot off the
coals, rib eye steaks. I had raided my wine cellar and had a
variety of wines set out, in addition there was a bowl of punch
and beer in the bar refer.
Endless tales were told and a good time was had by all. Jackie
and I cut and served the cake accompanied by a small helping of
my special white fruit salad.
After farewell hugs and kisses we pitched in and helped returned
the house to it's pristine condition. I had packed all the items
we brought in several of the large plastic storage boxes. So
things went back together and into the van with relative ease,
and with more hugs from my brothers and their wives we drove the
hour South to home passing through several storm cells.
Now Sunday afternoon we are on the way in a few minutes to meet
Sandra at the 13 Coins near SeaTac for dinner on her way back to
Honolulu.
"Happiness is the sky in bloom" (and planning the rest of our
lives and revising our "bucket List).

I was saddened to learn that David Burnett also from the
plutonium class of '62 has left us. But of course, I was glad
that he had accepted the salvation of the Lord a few years ago.
David and I go way back. I think we were in the same classes in
Kindergarten until at least 3rd grade at Spalding. The reason
David and I sort of bonded is that we were the odd balls out, in
that we were both hopelessly left-handed. I remember our very
kind 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Richmond, I believe her name was,
(for some reason I had at least 3 teachers that year, ending
with Mrs. Jergans, saying when we were trying to learn cursive
writing, "I don't know what to tell you two to do to make your
cursive letters correctly." It wasn't until I got into 6th grade
that Clair Karlson told me to just turn my paper the other way,
and I'd be able to write better and more correctly. It took
me less than a week, and I couldn't go back to my old way of
curling my hand over my previous writing hopelessly smugging
it... (I don't know if David was ever so enlightened.)
but my sympathies go out to David's family, he died too young,
as did his cousin (I believe) Dawna Kay BURNETT (also in the
class of l962) who also left us too young, several years ago. I
don't remember when Dawna and I met, but we last worked together
at the Downtown theater when it was still showing me movies by
the old Anderson's. And I don't remember it having a balcony,
just a projection room. I also don't remember a balcony in the
old theater on GWWay in downtown Richland where we used to watch
cowboy and Indian movies, was that called the Village Theater?
and I can't imagine that there was a balcony in the Uptown
theater or I'm sure I would have sat there... one time or
another when I was there.

I also just tried to send a photo via my phone, of Carol RICE
Forister ('62) and me (both of us the class of l962) at our
mini-reunion this past week in Kansas City. Actually we were
both in front of the Truman Library in Independance, MO, which
was a very interesting tour. We went to tour the World War 1
Museum the day before and we had a dinner together and got to
see the Clydesdales who happening to be visiting the berg we
were in, Westport. Which is a happening part of Kansas City,
sort of reminded me of the U District in Seattle...
Carol and I had a fun time together, and I hope we can manage
to get together more often somehow...
To any Bombers who happen to visit Indianapolis or the area
around, I now live in Hope, which is 40 minutes southeast of
Indy,and I'd be open to any possible mini-reunions back here...
