The Sandstorm is stymied due to problem with my address book I've
been spoiling everybody who doesn't "sign" their entry. IN THE
PAST I have been able to search my address book by using email
address or last name, find the person's name (including MAIDEN
name, ladies) and class year. So today, I go to my Mozilla
Thunderbird address book -- and the search box is just GONE...
I spent HOURS trying to get that search box back.
SO, if you sent in an entry without the information needed, your
entry won't appear in the Sandstorm till I get my search box back
OR until you answer my inquiry...

Brad, Brad, Brad, just when me thinks you are ready for the big
kids' table (to paraphrase Mr. David RIVERS ('65)) your youth and
inexperience come shining through. Jacksons was indeed the name of
the Potato Chip company you are thinking of. They were located out
on 4th Avenue... across from the train hump-yard. My Dad used to
stop by from time to time and bring us home a Big Paper Shopping
bag of the culls. I think he paid about 50 cents for these back
in the mid '60s. I do remember the grease soaking through the
bag but, boy were they good. They were actually better than the
packaged ones they sold in the store. Probably because you got
them straight from the cookers. They were still warm. Wash them
down with a Pop Shoppe pop and you were ready to finish up with a
Ho-Ho or a Ding-Dong from the Hostess outlet in Pasco.
Prompted a couple of other Pasco memories. Anyone remember getting
their hair cut at the Barber College in Pasco? It was on the East
end of Lewis, just before you went through the underpass into
East Pasco. Kind of by the Top Hat café. I think my brother and I
got our hair cut there until we could afford to pay for our own
haircuts. Then I started going to the Barber up on Thayer next to
the Pennywise Drug Store and the 24 hour Mayfair. Up pretty close
to your house, Brad. I think he was about as bad a Barber as the
Barber College. Finally, I started going to Lee Nelson, down on
the Parkade in Downtown Richland. He was not much of a Barber
either but he was a heck of an outdoorsman and had a little
sporting goods shop attached to the Barber Shop. Did a little
hunting and fishing with Lee over the years. One heck of a nice
guy.
Finally, I remember when Griggs was about the largest and most
happening store in the Tri-Cities. This was before Columbia Center
mall went in. I remember going there for deals on Converse tennis
shoes and Levi's jeans. But the big event every year was their
"Christmas madness" sale. It was kind of the pre-cursor to Black
Friday. It was closer to Christmas than Black Friday but the store
was open ALL night and they had some really good deals at the odd
hours in the late night/early morning. I remember driving over in
the dead of night so we could help my Mom multi-task by going
after multiple specials at the same time. One of the advantages
of having 8 kids back then, I guess.
And for those of you counting, my sister, Chris MARSHALL ('69),
and brother-in-law Blaine HOPKINS ('69) are celebrating 40 years
of wedded bliss today. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the Ronald E. Casillas
that passed away per the Tri-City Herald was a Class of '79er. If
so, it would be nice to get some info into what happened to him if
possible. I grew up with Ronny just around the corner from his
house, and spent many a day playing with matches in his basement.
Also, on a happier note, I introduced my son to a Spudnut, then
another one, then another, after the fourth one he told me they
were horrible. It was nice to come home to the ever changing
Richland landscape. My son has grown up in the Mason County area
of Shelton, WA his whole life, and when we first got into Richland
the first words out of his mouth were, "Good Lord it 93° out
here". When I said "So what", he replied, "but it's 1030 at
night!!" What a wimp. All night long I heard him swatting at
himself, and I asked him what the heck he was doing. He said he
couldn't tell if he had sweat beads running down his sides, or if
they were ticks crawling on him.

When our kids were in grade school two other moms and I would go
to the Pasco potato chip factory. They let us buy a box (we
brought our own cardboard boxes) full for $1.00. They were the
dark ones which are my favorites. It was great for the kids'
lunches.

Hanson's Barber Shop a few doors from The Spuddy in Uptown
Richland was the haircut spot for north enders. Always wondered
why my dad had to pay full price.
Re: Christmas memories from this Jewish guy... (Franco family
represented about 20% of the Richland Jewish population!)
1) ALWAYS hitting Midnight Mass with Paul SINCLAIR ('70) and
George DANA ('70-RIP), because that is where the babes were
(+ CYO dances)
2) Anyone remember Santa across from Uptown Richland? I think
one year he dropped ping pong balls from a helicopter and they
contained gifts or money or something or other. Anyone remember
that?
3) Also Santa used to walk around Uptown handing out candy canes.
I think JJ Newberry had a Santa upstairs where the toys were.

Our daughter Kris and granddaughter Ariel are ecstatic, too -
they're Auburn fans because Kris attended AUM [Auburn University ?
Montgomery] to get her teaching degree: 5-6 years of night school
from Selma (1.5 hours drive each way) then final year full time,
instantly tripled her teacher's aide salary and had a job one
month before she graduated while classmates were building resumes
and filling out applications.

usually got a cardboard box full of chips. It was maybe a buck or
two for that.

I"m pretty sure it is the Ron CASILLAS ('79) you grew up with. He
battled cancer for a couple years and he fought it right to the
end, trying new and experimental treatments. There will be a
celebration of life this Saturday [12/7] at Ray"s Golden Lion,
from 4-6 pm.

Re: Massive group hug
Rush rush rush... and not for Christmas shopping! Trying to head
out to L.A. for a class I need for the American Arbitration
Association... two days but starts early inna AM so I gotta leave
here this after noon and as usual will be tech-less... my phone
says ring ring and my computer will be at home... don't have no
note pad... people keep bugging me to get a smarter phone or a
note pad... why? Ain't got no good answer yet! When Brad UPTON
('74) emailed me about the chips, my stomach immediately did a
double back flip... anyone who has seen me around the potato chip
bowl knows I can eat maybe three atta time. In Cub Scouts, we
stopped by the factory and they brought out bowl after bowl of hot
greasy chips... they brought 'em and I ate 'em as fast as they
did! I was one sick puppy and have never been able to eat more
than a few since... there is a concept of too much of a good
thing... I learned it the hard way! After my class, on Thursday
I'll run home change clothes in the ol' suitcase and head for Oly
Friday morning for the Red sweater shindig... seems only a couple
of us have worn red sweaters lately tho... spending the morning
making sure I got airport shuttle booked in L.A. after looking at
the expected cab fares... plus, Terry DAVIS ('65) warned me about
the scenic drives and watching freeway signs to keep 'em honest
didn't sound like much fun... with the shuttle it seemed more cut
and dried... we'll see... there's a whole buncha Bomber dudes and
Bomber babes havin' b-days while I'm gone and since I won't be
back here till Sunday the 8th I figured I'd get em all now...
hope to see at least two of them in Oly... so here goes: HAPPY

New here, alum of Sacajawea Elementary :)
I am enjoying the shared memories of Richland! I grew up in an "F"
on Stevens, Dad was an engineer at Hanford 1947-60.
Attended the Manhattan Project 70th, including Richard Rhodes
(author of "The Making of the Atomic Bomb") in the Richland
Players Theatre.
I think I recall attending several productions of South Pacific
there in the 1950s. Is this an accurate recollection?

The movie version of this Rodgers and Hammerstein show would have
been at the Uptown (wide screen); the stage production more than
likely would have been at Chief Joseph (favored stage of Richland
Light Opera). The Richland Players were using the Village Theater
in 1958 (not sure when they moved to the Richland).

Jean POLLARD Simons who departed on December 1, 2013, at her home

Thank You Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) for your reference to our
"Plutonium class of '62." You triggered some thoughts regarding
conversations that I have sometimes with people when I tell them
that I grew up down wind from a nuclear reactor. I like to tell
stories about NOT being able to play hide & seek at night because
we all glowed in the dark like a bunch of green Cyalume glow
sticks running around the neighborhood. People ask if we ever got
too much radiation being a downwinder. Easy answer; Well DUH, do
you think I would behave this way if I hadn't been nuked a few
times? I knew that our class had a couple of nicknames, but I

There was a time when I was pretty good with the tech stuff, but
that time has apparently passed. Although I did take a fair amount

about the time I turned 65, it seems like I can't get anything to
work right anymore. Stuff that I used to do with relative ease now
just doesn't work. I have no idea why that is, but I can tell you
that it is damn frustrating. At this point all I can say is "I'm
sorry".

Several Bomber b-days today, some sad news and a report of the
festivities in Oly... my my my where to start... well, to begin
with, I'm sorry to report a dear friend passed on November 29th in
Sumner, WA. Mack BRAND ('64-RIP) was a good friend back in the
day. He served his country above and beyond and left more of
himself "in country" than many of us did. As some may know, Patty
KEENEY ('63) was a close friend and kept many of us in the loop on
some of Mack's illnesses over the years. He was one of the bravest
men I've ever known. In 2000, Number 32 ('63) and I had planned on
grabbing all of the Marines before we left from the group picture
in the Bomber Bowl (Sorry Fran) and having another picture
taken... well who better to try and remember than a couple of Jar
Heads... needless to say, by the time I remembered there were only
a handful of us lingering, but I'm glad to say Mack was one of
them. I am sending the picture with this post.

The red sweater, Chowder whatever for the Gold Medal Class of '63
was memorable this year to say the least. The night before,
a few of us gathered at Ellen WEIHERMILLER's ('63) for imported
Spudnuts, "white trash" and other delectable treats including a
wonderful spaghetti sauce over which Mary Ann WEILAND ('63) slaved
for 72 hours (at least that's what I'm told)... since Mary Lou
WATKINS ('63) was absent there was no one to supervise the rest
of us cooking those long skinny noodles and it was interesting...
what the hell is a colander anyway? Jimbeaux ('63) taught us
all how to use the "iPad" whenever someone had a question that
couldn't be answered in two seconds or less... the grab bag game
was a great treat this year... the ever young and lovely Miss
Nancy ('65) pulled a greatly coveted Bomber water bottle (not the
bottled water, a bottle to put water in)... I DID NOT give up a
beautiful frame of a picture of Mary Lou to get the water bottle
and if any one says I did he/she is a big fat liar... that's all
I gotta say... since Rosalie LANSING ('63) wasn't able to make it
this year, she couldn't swipe the bottle from me, but Mary Ann
came sneaking in from behind in the misguided belief that I really
needed the "great" prize she got... just as with the diamond
studded flip flops of last year, tho it said "GREAT" it was way
too small for me (what? grape? oh grape not great... well it was
still too small) so I left it for next year... Poor Kippy BRINKMAN
('62) ended up with two lumps of coal but Cecilia BENNETT ('65)
got a cool Bomber scarf that Kippy's, Gary lusted after but
decided to keep his Harry Potter beans (he left them too after he
read the disgusting flavors)... Jimbeaux got a wonderful trivia
game all from the year '63... after about the 20th question we
had to explain to Gary that all the questions were from '63...
VERY funny, but one of those "hadda be there moments... the party
really got exciting even before we all donned our gay apparel...
(Jammies)... when a left over bunch of fake moustaches were
discovered... I am sending another picture with this post...

I have not laughed that hard inna while... and Mary Ann, If I hurt
your feelings... I am sorry! I will make it up to you... but then
you already know that don't ya, sweets... tho I was only drinking
water, I recall nothing after Nancy announced it was "10:10 PM"...
that is except ML's Beaver staring at me all night long across the
table...
The red sweater gang met at the golf club house at 10 AM as
planned. A great group tho we were all afraid the cold and the
snow might deter a few. Joe FORD ('63) was dashing in all black
coat and beret... Pitts ('63) showed up in shorts and a Bomber T
(but no Caddy) while the rest of us were wearing as many layers as
the paint we found on the handball court earlier this year. Susan
HOKENSON's new knees were to die for and I thought she was going
to break out in the schottische at any minute (congrats on a
wonderful recovery!)... I went out for a smoke and found Mike
HUSKE ('64) who had stopped by to say Hi to the gang. It was a
wonderful group and just makes me even more happy to have been
allowed to sit at the big kids' table one more time! Thanks you
guys for showing me how it's done!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And now for the main event. Yes, for you kids who are bored
easily, there is more to come! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Larry WERSEN ('63),

Thanks for the notes regarding my "new" hair. It has never grown
this fast and was never curly for that matter. I hope I don't lose
my "chemo. curl", cheaper than a permanent. My hairdresser, before
we buzzed it all off didn't think I'd lose any more of what I

"bald-look".

Hey Tom (and Helen CROSS), if the Class of '62 is to be the
"plutonium class", then what becomes of all the other high school
classes in our shared history of the atomic city? Second class?
Un-plutonium? What's the class warfare fallout from our one-
upsmanship? Just wondering. Seems like Dick McCOY's first-in-line
plutonium production class of '45 would have first claim on the
plutonium label.
A possible less-exclusive distinction for the class of '62 might
be that our year graduation was also the year that the Hanford
electrical energy reactor was commissioned on a very hot and dusty
summer day. Maybe the "wired class of '62"!
Or, surely we all recall our voted class motto: "we build the
steps by which we climb." For a magic moment we had this sunrise
thing about setting a goal and having the mettle to make it
happen. So to match the inoffensive chutzpah of the "Gold Medal
Class of '63" maybe this: the Goaled Mettle Class of '62. (Sorry
'bout that.)
I'll stick with simple "class of '62". Said Shakespeare: "A rose
by any other name would smell as sweet".

Re: Radiation Doctor Appointment
I had my 3-month appointment following completion of radiation
treatments. I thought I was doing fine and he asked me about any
swelling. I thought he meant my arm and I said I didn't think so.
He was meaning my lower legs and I knew my pants were getting
tight in that area but figured I'd gained some weight. He feels I
may be retaining water and need to see my internist to see if I
may need to have a diuretic added to my pills. I'll see him come
Thursday and the oncologist on Friday. My mammogram was normal,
thank goodness... won't need another for a year. Here's to a great
rest of the week.

I still think the rusty nuts class of '65 sounds pretty darned
cool... and nobody could ever call us pretentious... but hey I'm
only one vote... I remember back a few years, before Terry WERNER
('65) dumped his jet boat for big wheeled jeeps, we used to
do the Reach every year... I must say, the older we got the
more frightening it became for me... driving skills seemed to
deteriorate over time... or maybe it was something else... I think
it was something else... the first year we didn't go, Jimmy
HEIDLEBAUH ('65) and I were unaware that the car show didn't start
on Friday... after Spuddies, Jimmy asked me what I wanted to do...
I had no clue... neither did he so he suggested: "let's got get
tattooed"... now we knew what we wanted... the R and the cloud...
now being in Richland there were only about 100 places we coulda
found a good picture... but kinda like when we joined the Marine
Corps, we just headed out half assed to the tattoo shop... when we
got there, Jimmy kinda scribbled a rough idea... I think we both
thought the guy would clean it up... we were wrong... so I ended
up with one on my right calf and Jimmy got one on his forearm...

say he got the job done and has become a great pal... between

Re: '64 in '14 - 50 Year Reunion
The class of 1964 will be having our 50 year class reunion on
August 22, 23, and 24, 2014. It will be held at The Red Lion in
Richland. Friday night will be a meet and greet. Saturday night
will be a dinner and a program. Sunday will be a breakfast for
those who want to get together one last time. A block of rooms
have been saved for us but it would probably be wise to book a
room early.
We are having a planning meeting this Saturday, December 14, 2013,

know that Ginny BRAND Dangerfield ('61), Mack's ('64-RIP) sister,
is putting together a list of pre-Veitnam stories for Mack's
children. As you can imagine, Mack came home in very bad shape and
his children never knew the wonderful kid/man we all knew before
the war. I have sent her one of my favorite Col-Hi memories and I

Today we celebrate the birthday of a very senior Bomber. He is so
senior, that he is accredited to three (count 'em 3) graduating
classes. He is also one of the "founding fathers" of Club 40. He
is so senior that he no longer sits at the big kids' table, but at
the adults table. He is so senior that the ol' propeller beanie is
awed in his presence. Oh, by the way, he is one of the instigators
of Club 40's scholarship fund. Guess it is time to wish Dick McCOY
('44, '45 and '02) a Happy Birthday! Hope the heat from the
candles on the cake melts the snow from your front door.
We also celebrate the anniversary of two nice people. I even had
a class with her back in the day. To Dick COATES ('52) and Kay

As Mike and I celebrate our 50th wedding Anniversary, I want
to thank all of the people in the GMC Class of '63 for all the
beautiful cards and letters sent. I had never heard of a Card
Shower before and for many weeks as we got cards, I did not know,
so every time I got a card, I was astounded and surprised to be
remembered. Finally, my son told me was the instigator (Card
Showers must be a mid-west thing). It just solidified in my mind
that my class truly is "GOLD" in their thoughtfulness and careing.
I can tell you after living several places in the US, that growing
up a Bomber represents truth, and goodness and beauty to me and I
hold a special place in my heart for you all. Thanks for making
our 50th so special!!! I am also quite aware that in our friends
and family, we are the 1st to reach 50 years, many did not live
long enough to reach 50 and so we celebrate all of those good
marriages and people that were not able to make it, but would
have had they lived. God bless you all!

Gotta call from my buddy, Magoo (NAB)... first class of Navy Seals
and the "model" for an old silk screen Ed Big Daddy Roth did back
inna early '60s he called "Gung Ho" right after seal training...
they wanted to call it "USMC", but back in those days the Marine
Corps said "no"... why they bothered to ask is beyond me...
I have the same tattoo on my left arm (weird ta have yer buddy...
a guy... tattooed on yer arm... could be worse... a VERY close
friend of mine recently had a girl's name tattooed on his arm...
the artist misspelled the babe's name... since she wasn't a
Bomber-babe, I say BFD... I didn't like her from the minute I
met her anyway... they didn't last long... funny, the b-day girl
encouraged me to have "Da Judge" done over the main tattoo)... so
anyway, Magoo called and it seems I've been missed from the pin
stripers' brush off for the last few years since I haven't been...
a little history... When Ed was alive, they held the rat fink
reunion in So-Cal at Moon's shop... which was mainly the striper's
Christmas Party... it got pretty big and when Ed passed, Chico at
moon kinda took it over and the stripers got left inna dust...
now I don't blame Chico at all and I like him a lot... but what to
do... well Ilene, "Trixy Rat", aka Mrs. Roth, decided to move the
Reunion to Manti, Utah, where nobody what don't live there is
gonna venture to inna winter and we've been doing it there in
June for about 11 years... but since it wasn't at Christmas, the
stripers still wanted a Christmas party and the "Brush -off" was
born... anyway, Magoo was given instructions to kid nap me this
year if he hadda, so I'll be headin' out inna morning with him and
several of my other striping buddies... dunno why cuz I can't make
a straight line letalone them fancy designs them kats do... this
is an invite only deal and I feel kinda weird being the only
civilian but it's always been fun and they treat me like one a the
gang so I guess I should just take it as a compliment that they
think I'm as weird as they are... soooooooooooo, today I'll be
doing the b-day guy on the correct day and the B-day Bomber-babe a
day early... so here we go with a HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dick McCOY ('45,

If so, I want her to know Mrs. Zbyszewski was the very best
teacher I had during my years in the Richland School District. She
was awesome, she didn't have favorites and everything she taught

Fourth grade was a highlight of my public school years! I still
enjoy plenty of memories of that year. Our first week of school,
our major assignment was to learn to spell her last name.
All my teachers were great but she was the best!

Oh ye of little faith, Hal SMITH ('56), as if I'd ferget! Years
ago, Thrifty used to have a Santa Claus in its store. Now I think
my memory must be failing because I have always remembered Santy
being upstairs... when I look at that building today, I can't see
how there could be an upstairs... but anyway, a bunch of us were
carousing in Thrifty and Santy was sitting there still as could
be. At first we thought maybe he was a fake. Butch MANTHAI ('65)
hadda go check it out and put his face right up to Santa's...
Santy opened his eyes and Butch jumped a mile... Santy then said:
"Well, well, it never rains but it pours Rivers." Someone yelled:
"Sh_t, Santa knows you, David!" We took off like nobody's
business... The picture BEHYMER ('64) posted the other day
reminded me of that episode... It was Officer Stout... I tried to
pick him out in the picture but couldn't... I suppose he hadda
first name but "Officer" was all I ever knew... all the memories
of growing up... one time one of the b-day boyz sent me a card of
two young very unattractive hoods... Our receptionist, asked me if
it was really a picture of the two of us... I never trusted her
very much in the way of thinking tasks after that... I could tell
story after story about this b-day kid. I've praised him as my
mentor time and time again and still think of him in that way...
He was certainly the brains of that duo when we were together...
As Terry DAVIS ('65) once said to me when I pulled his covers over
something he tried to pull: "Sometimes I think I liked you better
when you were stupid." I'll never forget the b-day boy, Jim COX
('64) and me sitting in Jim's basement waiting for the cops to
come arrest us for something we honestly didn't do... I owe this
kid so much and am so very happy we are such great friends...

Re: Class Labels
I am not a pacifist, not by any means, probably just the opposite
but I feel uncomfortable labeling our class after something as
deadly as Plutonium. Only a milligram or so is a lethal dose. Do
we want to be known for that?
I know we made the bomb to stop the war and reduce the number of
lives lost. But the "main intent" of the plutonium was to make a
weapon that would kill as many people as possible all at once. Do
we want to be known for that?
I know, I know, it stopped the war and I agree it's very important
to remember the conditions throughout the world at the time that
made us feel compelled to use such a weapon. Reluctantly I have to
agree using the bomb was probably the right thing to do.
Personally I feel naming our class after this element is like
gloating over the destruction it caused. Obviously others think
about the production and use of plutonium differently than I do
and that's their right.
Whenever I find someone criticizing something I always want to
know if they have a recommendation as to what it should be or how
to make things better. My answer is, no, in this case I don't.
I like the idea of class labels, just not plutonium but at the
same time I worry about a class so adverse to the idea of
plutonium or anything like that they would name themselves after
flour.

Uptown Thrifty Drugstore DID have a small upstairs area, which
served as Toyland at Christmas time. During our high school years,

remember whether there was a Santa.

Re: My Son
I am proud to say that today, December 20th, is my oldest son's
birthday. Tom will be 27. He is adopted, and had a very rough
early childhood with his deranged birth mother. He has had a
life filled with many struggles and challenges and failures. But
getting away from home proved to be a magic elixir. He is enrolled
in Job Corps in Los Angeles and is one of the outstanding students
in his class. He is studying Business Administration and Computer
Technology. The day before Thanksgiving he was certified in Excel,
Word, and Powerpoint, and certified to type 56 wpm. He is a leader
in his dormitory, and was chosen to go a half-day to a K-12 school
to help the administration and counsel students with attendance
problems. Even though the family counselor we used to take him to
gave up on him and said he would never finish school, never hold a
job, and be on public relief the rest of his life, we DID NOT give
up believing in him. So congratulations, my son, we are so proud
of you for showing the intelligence and determination we always
knew you had. When you graduate from Job Corps, that counselor is
going to get a copy of the graduation notice.

Legendary gas pumper at the Mobile Station on McMurray & GWWay.
This was after Don took it over from Pete Washer. I remember as
senior at Richland making a skit appearance as "The Shell Answer
man" in one of Vic's gas station shirts. No one in the always aware
class of 1970 seemed to notice the Shell Answer Man was wearing a
Mobile shirt.
As Pete TURPING ('70) noted to me yesterday we hope Vic is
enjoying a cold one or two with George. Like a lot of great
Bombers, Vic was a walking, talking good time always. I only

persons, of the passing of my sister, Rosalie. She graduated from

of her classmates from that time period. Rosalie passed away on
September 28, 2013, after a two year battle with liver cancer. She
was buried along side other members of her family in Williams, OR.
Her obit was printed in the Tri City Herald on Thursday, December

First may I say I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Vic
MARSHALL ('71-RIP). Tho I didn't know him personally, we did email
a few times and I enjoyed his posts.
I was happy to find out there was, in fact, a second story to
Thrifty Drug. Thanks Chuck LOLLIS ('64) for letting me know
Officer Stout's name was Ted and that I was correct on the second
story. That was confirmed by Donna BOWERS Rice ('63) who is just
finishing celebrating her anniversary and took the time to let me
know I wasn't dreaming... I know I'm not much of a sports fan, tho
a couple of Gold Medal Bomber-babes have worked very hard to get
me to get me interested in following Cougars... I gotta say,
Cougar watching is mighty interesting... in fact I must say I
really enjoy it... but today I just finished watching "Glory
Road" and am now watching "Remember the Titans". When that movie
came out I was sure Denzel was out for another Academy Award
(Sorry Terry ('65), but some a them St. Elsewhere guys really got
it)... So other than my interest in Cougars, I guess I do enjoy
some sports movies (the one about the Texas HS team... Friday
Night Lights or something like that is a favorite too)... and How
'bout them Cubbies... prolly take the super bowl this year... huh?

Another day in the recent past I was driving from North of Seattle
to near Lacey. I had begun my journey mid afternoon and typical
traffic insured that I was able to enjoy "the Christmas" sunset
sitting nearly motionless on I-5 listening to favorite carols on
the radio station which plays them exclusively this time of year,
like "Who put the 'L' in Noel" and "Mistletoe Smoking By An Open
Fire". The "Christmas Sunset" which is unlike a EOD (end of
daylight) when the sky goes from light gray to progressively
darker gray, and distinguished from a clear sky of blue which
ends with a sliver of orange of the western horizon to dark
(technically a sunset but not a "Sunset") the Christmas Sunset is
a sky full of lots of clouds of differing sizes and shapes that in
the last hours of light blaze pink, red, orange, yellow with just
enough clear sky to make it interesting; whenever that happens
near the actual holiday is the "Christmas Sunset" (look it up,
it's on the Internet). All of this prompted me to tell a grandson
about the legend of Randell the Christmas Penguin. A shame how
Randell has been overshadowed by other seasonal stories and song.
How Randell appears after Christmas morning and takes all of
the discarded wrapping paper, ribbons and bows, name tags, and
invisible tape, and returns it to the South Pole until next year's
holiday season begins in mid August. My grand children doubt my
stories as others have forgotten also. Happy Holidays to all,
believe in Randell the Christmas Penguin or else...

In response to Helen CROSS Kirk?s ('62) question to me, the first
part of my original proposal was true: I am a bit envious of
classes that have a designation. My suggestion for "Plutonium
Class of '62", however, was tongue-in-cheek. I thought my
rationale, "slightly radioactive but harmless" (which I learned
from the tour of B Reactor at our 50th class reunion), would
indicate that. I was hoping that someone would suggest something
more reasonable. I'm still open.
It got up to 82° here in Mesa on December 15th (I think it was) ?
the average high for this time of year is 65. It's colder now with
a rain storm moving through. The swimming pool is 53°, so we
aren't swimming. I Miss the exercise.

So last Saturday night a friend called and invited me to a comedy
show at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City, OR. I was so
surprised when the last act of the evening was Brad UPTON ('74) of
Richland Bomber fame! I did get to talk to him for a minute after
the show and told him it was really great!
Then on Monday when I took my daughter to the doctor in Lincoln
City, OR a gentleman came up to me and asked if the "Richland
Bomber" plates on my car were mine? Turns out he graduated from
Col-Hi in the early '50s! Carl McBEE ('51). SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL!
LOL.

Vic showed up at Carmichael as a 9th grader after his 8 year stint
at Christ the King and quickly became the go-to guy for anyone in
need of a laugh. Vic was a casual friend through high school
(hanging out a lot in the band room... he was a decent bass
player) but we really connected after graduation as email buddies
with him in Michigan and me in Portland... occasional discussions
on the issues of the day but mostly a constant stream of internet
humor. Every five years Vic would be in Richland for a class
reunion and we often managed to get in a round of golf (I was
always grateful to know there was at least one person on the
planet who was a worse golfer than me!)
Two years ago after being involved, as always, in the planning of
our 40th reunion, Vic missed the reunion due to illness. Last
Spring I got an email from him wondering about the viability of
another gathering, ostensibly to have a mass 60th birthday party,
but mainly because Vic was still disappointed at having missed the
2011 gathering. Of course, I gave Vic all the reasons it wouldn't
work... only two years since the last, busy summer weekend, too
far to travel, sun is in my eyes, etc. I wasn't a bit surprised to
find myself at a Riverside Park picnic on an August Saturday with
about 100 classmates celebrating what we dubbed Vicapalooza.
Pete HEDGES ('71) had better get started on a couple of extra
casks of wine for the next reunion... we are going to need it for
all the toasts that we will be raising to Vic.

Re: The word, "So. . ."
Has anyone else noticed that the word, "So. . ." is starting to be
used at the start of a whole lot of sentences, on radio, TV, and
now in the Sandstorm? Kind of like, "like" back in the late ?60s
("Like, wow, man!"), or "whatever", and "Dude!", lately?
I have found myself doing it in emails, over the last couple of
years, and am now making a concerted effort to NOT do it. But
what really brought this into focus for me, was hearing Harlen
Ellison on the radio a couple of nights ago. It was a hilarious
hour with this very talented man, but he was constantly correcting
the language usage of his old friend, who was the talk show host.
After the 3rd time, the host laughingly said something like,
"Harlen, you?re ALWAYS correcting my language.", and Harlen
replied, "Well, you know that I do that to everyone, because
language is what I DO!"

Lee in the winter: The principal had rich, delicious hot cocoa for
us before we proceeded to our lessons. She did have to be somewhat
forceful to get me moving toward class in a timely manner.

actually intentionally visiting a known Bomber.

Okanogan County, WA, I wore one -- and got comments --

Re: Randell the Christmas Penguin
I must admit to being a bit confused about why Randell the
Christmas Penguin would return all the Christmas wrapping paper,
ribbons, bows, etc. to the South Pole. Now I know that penguins
are indigenous to the Antarctic, not the Arctic, but all of my
research lo these 68 years has led me to believe that Santa has
his workshop at the North Pole. Has Santa relocated his base of
operations to the South Pole and not informed me of his new
address? Is that why I did not get the RV I asked for last year?
It can't be that I am not on his nice list, after-all, I am a
Bomber! I know an RV will not fit in my stocking hung with care,
but surely the keys and title will.

Re: Swimming Pools
I must admit being envious of you people who live in some of the
warmer areas of the US. Your pool was 53°. Last week I bet if I
took the safety cover loose from my cement pond I would have seen
some ice in it. Every year we have to open the pool and close the
pool, and it is closed 2/3rds of the year. Opening is not too bad,
but it sure is a lot of work to close it. This year I worked five
hours thinking, having to lower the water level, I had to at least
get the safety cover on before quitting for the day. As soon as I
got in the door I laid down on the floor for a while and didn't
feel like doing anything the next whole day. I guess I'm getting
too old for this stuff. Maybe next year I need to pay someone else
to do it.
Re: Bombs, Indians, and Rebels
Just read where they are changing the name of another school that
was named after a Confederate general. Again (as with Randell the
Christmas Penguin) I am confused, (this seems to be happening a
lot lately.) It seems that if we name a school, team, or maybe
even a class after general or the Atomic bomb it is an honor, but
if named after a Native-American, it is an insult--and the result
being negative in each case. Maybe it is just me, but maybe we
should decide if naming something is an honor or an insult before
we move on to the next step. My own thought is that if it is
something good, it is an honor. If it is something bad, like say
an outhouse, then it would be an insult. Although (confusion
again) I think an outhouse might be a pretty good thing when you
need one.
Re: Unfinished business from 50 years ago
French class in the year 1963-1964 we had to read a book about
something French and give a report. I read a book by one of
Napoleon's generals who was with him on his invasion and retreat
from Russia in 1815. Think of this, Napoleon invaded and sacked
Moscow the 600,000 Frenchman, then had to retreat in the extreme
cold where all but about 10,000 died from the cold and starvation.
That is a loss in just a few months of about the same number of
Americans killed in four years of Civil War, which itself is about
1/2 of all Americans lost in all wars since the Revolution.
The author told of throwing the huge Ivan the Great cross and a
giant cannon they had pillaged into a lake being unable to take
them any further. After my report another student asked me if
those items were ever recovered. I had to say that I did not know,
that I had tried to research it and could not find out.
Whoever that was, and if you are reading this, and if you even
remember it: I have wondered about that from time to time over the
years. Well now we have this thing called google, so I thought it
was time to find out. Turns out that Napoleon had another General
with him who also wrote about this invasion and retreat from
Russia. He wrote they threw the entire Moscow pillage into the
Semley lake, also including many cannons, ancient guns and Kremlin
jewelry. The Russians have made attempts to recover the treasure
including draining the lake in the 1800s. Two other attempts were
made 1910 to 1912 and 1958 to 1960 with no success.
The thinking now is that the Semley lake is too small for all of
the loot (supposed to be 80 tons of gold alone). There are many
lakes along the route bigger and deeper and with good roads to
them. The thought is Napoleon miss-identified the lake and left a
bunch of empty gun carriages at the wrong place to throw anyone
but himself off the trail to recover the treasure.
So the answer is: Not yet.

Well there, Mr. TURNER ('71) it's nice to see someone else has
discovered there's no time like the present for Bombers to get
together. I am forever grateful to Ricky WARFORD ('65) who
suggested years ago that the '65ers meet every year. And to our
own Maren ('63 & '64) for expanding my world of Bomber friends
far beyond my wildest dreams! That little group a Bomber-babes
('64 & '63) what put on R2K and R2K+10 did all of us a world of
good as well!!!!!!!!! I cannot imagine not having "grown up" in
Richland. I cannot imagine having not grown up in Richland at the
time so many of us did. That time frame spans many years as each
of us can attest. Our memories are not just of growing up on our
block, but of the entire Richland experience. Our name, Bombers,
holds more emotion that those not having had that experience can
possibly fathom. I am constantly being told by others (It's
amazing how often it actually comes up in conversation) how lucky
we are to have been and to continue to be so close to others from
our home town. Many have never been or only attended one or two
reunions and say they really weren't that interested. That sure
ain't the Bomber way. The two B-day guys today are the perfect
example of the friendship and love we share. In fact, it is
amazing that their b-day came up when it did and just when I was
feeling this feeling! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to two life long friends,
Craig LANSING ('62) and Bill BLANKINGSHIP ('62) on your special

Re: Vic MARSHALL ('71-RIP)
I didn't know Vic but he sounded and wrote like a true Bomber
and genuinely nice guy. I think he lived in Michigan if my ever
fading memory serves me right, and one of the neat bonuses of the
Sandstorm is getting the different perspectives of Bombers living
all over the country and overseas. It is just a mini-travelogue.
Vic was good at that, the stuff he was doing, going to Chicago (or
wherever) to a stage play or entertainer, or just happenings in
his neck of the world was interesting and highly informative. I
hate losing any Bomber, and always read the Sandstorm obits first.
So many people I would have liked to have known and Vic was high
on that list. My most sincere thoughts and prayers to his wife and
family. RIP, Bomber Dude.
Re: Jackson's Potato Chips
Larry ANDERSON ('56) (dude, were are you?) got me a job at
Campbell's #1 store in south Richland and I remember the Jackson's
Chips guy very well. Whilst at our store the Manager, a weight
lifter with two sons (Lonnie and ????), also weight lifters, would
ask us to go out and help the guy transfer his products from a
truck just in from the Pasco plant. I was not a weight lifter but
moving boxes of potato chips 12 feet would not have made me a Mr.
America by any stretch of the imagination. He would leave us three
or four giant grocery bags of chips to eat or take home. The
Manager and sons were great guys and really shared the wealth with
us all the time. Kit Campbell got in on the act as well as he just
loved those chips and they were a big seller.
Re: The Desert
We are now at our condo in Rancho Mirage, CA (Palm Springs area)
and not far from Vegas, Phoenix and Yuma Bombers. Christmas time
in the desert is weird. We have a nice sized condo but my lovely
wife (Franklin/Seattle '58) has enough seating in the front room
to host a Seahawks game so we have no space for a proper tree.
Because we do like some green around the joint, we have a giant
fake tree in one corner so she decorates it Christmas style. One
of my good Jewish buddies came over and exclaimed to his wife
"...look Esther, a giant Hanukkah bush..." So be it. I am
ecumenical.
It has been fairly cold down here for "down here" lately. Hit 33F
the other night and when the temps go below 60, the locals rug up
something fierce. Carhart gear, wool pants, hoodies, down coats,
the whole bit. You can, however, tell folks from Calgary and
Winnipeg as they still have on their golf shirts and shorts and
prefer to eat outside and go swimming. It is all relative..
Re: The Cougs
I am not a big Coug fan but I like the Pac 12 and I like the way
Mike Leach smiles. He is getting things turned around in Pullman
but the program had a flashback when they "Couged it" against
Colorado State. I even had them on my board by 7.
Speaking of football, I like what the Huskies have done and you
will see a different kind of team under Chris Peterson. My college
Alma Mater Linfield College (NCAA Division III) with a school
population of 2,000 lost 24-21 in the national semi-finals to the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (12,500 kids), the eventual
national champ.. We are mounting a drive to get Whitewater moved
up to Division II (Central WA, Western OR, etc.) where they belong
but the geniuses at NCAA tell us that Whitewater has opted for
Division III so they can't, or don't have to, give athletic
scholarships. Only Grants-In-Aid in Division III. There are three
such schools in Division III and they are all state universities
in Wisconsin. I found out, because their student fees from 12,500
kids, provide an athletic fund for football that is greater than
Linfield, Puget Sound and Pacific U combined. Linfield has won the
Division III national baseball championship the past two years,
under former Yankee and Linfield grad Scott Brosius (7 Golden
Gloves and World Series MVP) but I am told that Wisconsin-
Whitewater goes Division II for that sport and several woman's
sports. I always knew the NCAA was on the take at all levels.

Re: Seasons Greetings
Finally got my fingers warm enough to type. I am in Alaska helping
Jackie prepping for her 2 New Years eve displays. City of Wasilla
at 8pm and a private display in a housing development at 10. Icy
winds and blowing snow make it pretty miserable even behind a
little shelter. In the last 2 days I have seen at least 30 moose.
They are pretty docile in this weather. The one that sleeps in
Jackie's driveway sees us coming and gets up and ambles off down
the street. But in the morning that cow moose is back in her
favorite spot. Out of the wind and under an evergreen tree. I have
wacked her with a stick a couple of times to get her to move, but
I would not do that in the spring when she has a calf. They can
get mean and surprisingly fast.
There is nearly 2 feet of snow in her yard in Anchorage. and is it
snowing as I write this. We parked the van in the street and the
driveway plow will be here some time tonight and he does a great
job of cleaning it up.
Jackie and I will spend Christmas together and then I fly out to
Dutch Harbor, AK for the 19th time for their huge New Years
display fired right at Midnight. This is our first married
Christmas and yes it is better as man and wife.
So it is time to say Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones
and friends. and we wish and hope for all of you and yours to have
a safe,happy, healthy and prosperous New Years.

in, and I remember celebrating your almost Christmas birthday!
Well, come on, all you chemistry buffs, is plutonium almost
harmless, as David DOUGLAS ('62), stated he learned at the reactor
tour we took during our 50th reunion? (I was on that same tour and
don't remember a word about it, but I am not -- nor ever have been
-- as my chemistry teacher (Mr. Hubbard, I believe it was) can
tell you. I remember one day asking him why I got a reaction no
one else did during a lab experiment, and him saying, "I'm not
sure why you got that reaction", and I knew I wasn't destined to
be a chemist. True, I had other clues.
But perhaps after Christmas, we can decide if plutonium is
"lethal" or "almost harmless" and get on with nicknaming (albeit
a little late, seeing we have celebrated our 50th reunion, plus),
our great class of '62.

I have done no research, but, just having been to Russia and to
the Kremlin, I think they may have recovered a good part of the
loot from that lake. I have never seen more gold/jewels in my
entire life as at the Kremlin in the Armory. We only spent 1/2 day
there on our tour, but it wasn't enough. I was told that only
one more site in the world has more gold/jewels and that is the
collection of the Shah of Iran. Think diamonds and rubies on their
coaches and sleighs, along w/incredible Fabrege Eggs and clothing
dripping w/jewels and pearls. You cannot take pictures, so go slow
to try and absorb what you are seeing. We saw many of the canons
recovered from Napolean's Retreat across from the Duma, but did
not get enough time to really inspect their artistry as there are
many important Russian Orthodox Cathedrals inside the Kremlin. The
largest cannon ever built (never fired) and the largest bell ever
forged (never rung) gives you a perspective about the Russian
people that you cannot fathom until you see their penchant for
having the "biggest and the best". Seeing the monument to the
Napoleonic War, where so many French as well as Russians died on
that retreat, made me wonder if that amount who died can possibly
be exact. As does the Hall of Tears in their WWII Memorial -
27,000 crystal tears hanging in this huge hall representing the
27 million who died in Russia fighting the Germans. But, no
matter, war kills more than people and we hope that money spent on
wars can now be spent on the Russian people and development which
needs to happen here in the US as well. By the way, Napolean was
said to have said, that one of the reasons he lost, was the roads,
he famously said, "there are no roads in Russia, only directions."
This is true today and was part of the problem in WWII for the
Germans. You will never appreciate all the auxiliary paved roads
we have across our country till you sit in a 3 hour traffic jam
that should have taken 45 minutes. With all the oil wealth in
Russia, one hopes this will be a priority for Putin. Thanks,
Dennis, for letting me share, some of what we learned there. It
was an amazing learning experience with not enough time spent
prior, reading the history, but I plan to remedy that this winter.
Would recommend a trip to Russia, just to see all the differences.

A Very Merry Christmas to all Bombers out in Bomberville!
My Sweet Adeline group performed at the Skamania Lodge last night
to a crowd full. And we had so much fun with our audience. We had
such a beautiful Christmas setting with the tree, the roaring
fire and the gingerbread house village on display. It reminded me
of all those wonderful Christmas, magical moments when we sang
as children in our plays at school, our church programs and
especially with Mr. Stell's chorus at different places around town
and for different occasions. I can still hear the guys deep voices
on "Little Drummer Boy" which was a new song that came out in the
early '60s. I can't sing "Jingle Bells" without putting in all the
"Ho-hos", "Ha-has", "Hee-hees" and "Ding-dings" we put in that
song. And is there any girl especially who doesn't remember being
an angel with a sheet costume, cardboard wings with gold tinsel
trim and tie around our waists and halos in our hair? And I also
did Christmas caroling in trucks filled with bales of hay. I think
it was with the square dancers at the Community Hall. They took us
all over the Tri-Cities it seemed and then we had cocoa and
cookies afterward.
I have so many wonderful memories of star-filled nights walking
in the snow. The stars were not only brilliant in the sky but
made the snow look like it was sprinkled with glitter. How much
fun it was to sled on those nights down Bomber Road with all the
Christmas lights glowing as well.

There seems to be some considerable urgency being put forth on the
part of some classes to assign themselves a unique moniker before
the end of the year and the implementation of the ACA.
Now in my unjaudiced eye several names are already in place based
on certain values and attributes that include:
~ The Members Only jacketed, Hush Puppy, Ban Lon, Sans-a-Belt
wearing, Dodge mini-van driving class of '62
~ The Gold Medal Class of '63
~ The White Socks Class of '64
~ The Card Table Class of '65
As we advance in age I think that some particular attention should
also be directed toward an appropriate class Patron Saint.
The aforementioned Gold Medal Class of '63, is currently and
always has been protected by Saint Punetis Quatuor, who' s done a
pretty damn good job considering what he's had to work with and
has left the seat down and the light on.

Just want to wish all Bombers Feliz Navidad from Sarchí, Costa
Rica, where we're renting a cabin on an organic farm. We overlook
a valley where the locals shoot fireworks every night. During the
day we get to watch bananas, pineapples and other tasty stuff grow.
The coffee harvest completed a few days ago. It was light because
the rainy season was less rainy than usual. Every day is 80°F and
sunny. Nights are cool in the mid to upper 60s. We're up in the
mountains at about 3,000 feet. There are no mosquitoes and people
tell us the only poisonous things are coral snakes but they're shy
and don't let you get close enough to see them. People are warm
and friendly. Lovely place to be for Christmas or any other time
too.

What the guide said during the B Reactor tour was, a courier
carried the processed plutonium in a brief case by train from
Portland to San Francisco (I think), and handed off to another
courier who took it on to Oak Ridge. The plutonium was slightly
radioactive, but it was alpha radiation, not the deadly gamma
radiation, so it was mostly harmless (which I believe was also the
revised description of Earth in Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy).
I liked Jim HAMILTON?s ('63) suggestion for '62, except I drive
a Toyota Sienna mini van, not a Dodge. But I'm probably the only
class member who has a Japanese wife, too.

Yes, the "suitcase" was sent by courier from Hanford, but it was
sent to Alamogordo, New Mexico, not Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The
suitcase contained the 13 1/2 pounds of Plutonium that produced
the first nuclear explosion in the solar system outside of the
sun, sending up a fireball on July 16, 1945, that was still seen
more than 200 miles away and heard at a distance of 40 miles.
Equivalent to 20,000 tons of TNT (but still barely a speck of the
destructive power found in the later hydrogen bomb). The curious
public was told that a munitions storage facility had suffered an
accident. Technically this is still "chemistry" but precisely it
is atomic physics, categorically much more than the chemistry of
composite molecules or munitions.
The code name for the Alamogordo test, Trinity, was drawn perhaps
penitently from English poet John Donne "batter my heart, three
person'd God, for you as yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek
to mend." Immediately after the blast the same Manhattan Project
manager, Robert Oppenheimer, was heard to quote from the Hindu
Bhagavad Gita: "Now I have become death, the destroyer of worlds."
Hanford and Oak Ridge were two different parts of the Manhattan
Project. Hanford irradiated uranium (U-235) to produce plutonium
(Pu-239) as the material for the atomic bomb used on Nagasaki; the
parallel program at Oak Ridge produced enriched uranium as the
fuel for the different atomic bomb used three days earlier on
Hiroshima.

That makes perfect sense that both Santa and Randell would be
heading South because it is down hill. I remember early in grade
school, like in first or second grade, maybe even third, thinking
how weird it must be when you are "down under" to be walking

look like what a fly would see walking on the ceiling. I did have

Very interesting, sounds like quite a sight to see. I do remember
seeing something on TV about the Russian treasure and they showed
something mounted way up near the ceiling. They showed how
elaborate the decoration was on top of it and where it was mounted
no one would ever be able to see it. A good deal of the research I
did was on an English language Russian site which had a lot of
information on what they call the Patriot's War of 1812. Not to be
confused with our War of 1812 with the English. I did just now
look up the "Tsar Cannon" and the "Tsar Bell" on Wikipedia.

It says that Napoleon wanted to take the giant cannon back, but
could not because its wooden carriage destroyed was in the fire
when they burned Moscow. The metal carriage on it now was built in
1835. Maybe the French General told of the giant cannon, then
later when he wrote about throwing the giant Cross and cannon in
the lake I assumed it was the giant cannon and reported it to the
class that way. Wikipedia says he also wanted to take that bell
back to France too, but it was just too heavy.

Oui, Monsieur Madden was my French teacher. I would have written

Me, being a stand up comedian, I don't think so. They say peoples
biggest fear is standing in front of people and talking. Well,
that was never a problem for me. I remember so many kids would, if
given a choice, write their book reports so they would not have to
get up in front of the class and talk. I thought that was just
extra work when all you had to do was just get up there and talk
about the book. So (oops, there goess starting a sentence with
"So") I guess in that respect I could either be a politician or a
stand up comedian. However, I think I am too smart to become a

Read the article about the Roller Rink. At our house it was a den
of iniquity, a haven of sin, Las Vegas on Stevens or just simply
a place synonymous with the word hickey. That is unless it was a
Church Youth Group or Blue Bird troop skate, then it was OK. I on
occasion ducked in to cup a heater on my way to and from Indian
Country. What with the Rec Hall and the Bus Depot having gone the
way of the George Prout Swim & Pee, it just might be one of the
last places for our youth to commence learning how to fritter
their lives away.

Re: Roller rinks
For some reason roller rinks and pool halls seemed to have
triggered something in the minds of parents to label them as dens
of (your pick) and should be avoided at all costs. Bus depots were
on the edge of immorality (or whatever). Worse, they were possible
places where the youths could buy cigarettes or beer. Pool halls,
yes, but roller rinks? I suppose that it was because some young
ladies were given to wearing short skirts while skating.
In this vein, I do remember irate letters to the editor of either
local paper about the scandalous behavior of the baton twirlers
at football game half-times. These "hussies" were marching up and
down the field not only twirling batons, but also flipping their
skirts. Oh, the shame, the immorality! What could their parents
be thinking. The funny thing about it was that the "wrath" was
directed only at Bomber baton twirlers. I guess the Pasco and
Kennewick counterparts still wore long skirts and bloomers. And,
wouldn't you know it, Hi-Spot was located in the rec hall during
my youth. How could they put children in close proximity of a
pool hall and bowling alley? What was the government thinking?

Re: First bomb Plutonium
The recent discussion of plutonium and the means of transport has
raised questions in my mind.
First, there were two plutonium bombs, Trinity Test, and Nagasaki.
Secondly, was the hand-carried shipment for both bombs? or was
there more than one shipment?
Third, there is the question of critical mass. Presumably there
was enough to create a critical mass when properly configured
(imploded). It must also be presumed that if 13.5 lbs would make a
critical mass, then either it was "safe by geometry" or some
quantity was carried separately in some fashion. Some time back I
remember reading that the latest weapons technology had
significantly reduced the amount of PU 239 needed for various
sizes of nuclear weapons. I am a long way from nuclear physics,
but I have done a good bit of reading and it is my understanding
that achieving the proper critical mass for a pure bomb explosion
is well more than slapping up a pile of Pu239. The purity of the
Pu239 as well as its density have to reach some correct
proportions or you get something between a small excursion and a
weak bomb.
Whoever the guy was carrying the briefcase had to have some big
cahjones. Personally, I cannot believe he did not have at least
some idea of what was in the case and how important it was. I also
believe there had to be some security agents somewhere nearby.
Small side story about transporting nuclear weapons... Some of you
will remember that during the activation of Sub Base Bangor in
Puget Sound they had a "White Train" running from Utah to the Sub
Base. It was literally painted white. Hundreds of people threw
themselves on the tracks holding up the transport of the new
Trident weapons. My oldest daughter was watching the news with me
and saw the fuss going on and said "What a waste, don't they know
they can't really stop those bombs from reaching the base no
matter what they do?" I said "I think it is a sham and they have
shipped them in trucks with maybe... food company labels on them
and the warheads are already at the Base". Debbie laughed and said
"Do you really think they would do that?". I said "It wouldn't
surprise me".
Several months later I came home and Debbie met me at the door
with the newspaper, all excited. The article said the RR was a
sham and the warheads were shipped to Bangor in freight trucks
with food company labels on them.

are. I cannot believe that I used to lay in the snow

years makes. We are prepping for 2 displays Jackie has
on N Y Eve. I fly to Dutch Harbor, AK, on the 28th
where it is a warm 36°. My crew has the 700+ mortars
all set up and half of them loaded. We will be ready
fire AM on the 30th. Showtime is midnight N Y Eve.
Sunday afternoon buffet is all the King Crab you can
eat. Yum. Yum.

I've certainly enjoyed all the discussions on the different class
nicknames. Where have you come up with them? A couple weeks ago,
you stated several different class nicknames and one of them was
for class '64, I don't remember what the name was that you gave
us, but I had never heard of it before now. That's OK though, as I
never did know we had a class nickname, haha. I looked at my 1964
Columbian but nothing was said. Several years ago, Jamie WORLEY
('64), used our class nickname as "Magic Class". First and last
time that it was used, except by me. I really liked it so I used
it, thinking that it was that name.... funny thing is that if I
DON'T use it now, Maren adds it in for me. So, is there anyone in
the class of '64 who really knows our class nickname?
I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas and was lucky enough to
spend it with family. After 16 years of living in Eureka, CA, I
was blessed with being with my family for Thanksgiving and
Christmas. Just about 4 months ago, we moved back to Kennewick. So
glad we did!!! We're much better off.
2014 will be with us in a few short days. Is everyone ready for a
new beginning? I, myself, am so excited!

I have such great memories of the roller skating rink!!!!! I
listened to music as loud as kids today drive around to listening
to their tunes in their cars (including me) at that wonderful
place to skate and meet friends. Of course I was as young as the
ever lovely Miss Nancy (two years younger than Jimbeaux!) and
probably started going with my youth group from church but hey!
no that's not it! I started skating much younger than that!!!!!!
I wish we would have had an ice skating rink in Richland because
I would have spent all my time there and probably would have
qualified for the Olympics!!!!!
Oh to run barefoot through that old town of the '50s again, I
would never again complain that it was boring in the summer!! HA

Time once again to break out the ol' propeller beanie. There is a
story behind this particular birthday event. It seems that this
honoree's older brother insisted that he not be born on Christmas
Day (something about getting double presents) nor born on New
Year's Day (notoriety in the local papers as possibly the "first
baby born"). I would hazard a guess that somehow the older brother
prevailed (as if...). Thus Phil Robert GANT ('54) was born on
the 30th of December. Take a moment to wish him a very "Happy
Birthday!"; he is, after all a member of The Class of '54.
Re: Plutonium
A portion of the first 13.5 lbs. of plutonium was used in
providing the "punch" for the "gadget" (as the warhead was
called). It was formed as a sphere and implanted inside a sphere
of specially shaped explosive charges. The remainder, plus what
was manufactured later was similarly formed as the "active
ingredient" for "Fat Man". The amount of plutonium used in both
the Trinity test and the Nagasaki bomb was considerably less than
the uranium used in the "Little Boy" bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
The yield of the Hiroshima bomb was between 12 and 13 kilotons.
Both the "gadget" and "Fat Man" had yields of approximately 20 KT
each, thus providing a "bigger bang for the buck."

I remember having fun skating at the roller rink in grade school
close to Tastee Freeze. Did it have a name? Atomic Roll or
something and it cost a quarter or dime to get in and dime to rent
skates with 4 wood wheels! My sister Jan ('60) got shoe skates one
Christmas. Atomic Bowl was the bowling alley? Also remembering my
parents not wanting me to go late on Fridays or Saturdays because
it was a "soldier hangout". I think there were young men in
fatigues standing around outside the front door... some smoking?
I totally respect young men and women now in our military and they
deserve it but somehow it wasn't where my parents wanted me to be.
The Army base must have been at North Richland and it was a place
to hangout.
Funny because my dad retired from the Army Reserve with a Lt Col
rank. Maybe he was remembering what he did stationed in Europe!!!

It seems that there was more than one plutonium shipment from
Hanford to Los Alamos (and then assembled together for the
"Trinity" test of "the Gadget" on July 16, 1945, at the nearby
Alamogordo site) and that these shipments began on February 5,
1945, from reactors B, D and F. By April there was a shipment
every 5 days, which means that there was more than one suitcase
and more than one courier (for the total of 13.5 pounds). Or else
the famous suitcase shipment was unique in some way.
The Hanford plutonium bomb ("Fat Man") and the Oak Ridge uranium
bomb ("Thin Man") were different animals. Fat Man was imploded
inward by nearly 2,000 perfectly timed and shaped detonators
packed spherically around the nuclear core, something like the
wedges of an orange, causing the nuclear explosion over Nagasaki
on August 9, 1945.
As for the "bang for the buck", there is this little detail about
nuclear cleanup. The total nationwide cost of the Manhattan
Project was two billion (1945 dollars). The estimated national
cost for cleanup/disposal/reuse of some sort for all nuclear
waste from the World War II and later Cold War era is over 200
billion (current dollars). The half-life deterioration rate of
plutonium is 24,000 years, which means a theoretical risk (if
internalized) extending out 240,000 years (using the conservative
"10-half lives maxim"). Meanwhile federal budget negotiation on
needed long-term funding for nuclear cleanup at Hanford and
elsewhere has a half-life of days and so deteriorates after hours
at most. (And all of this is not to mention the Soviet nuclear
waste sites, and the goal of eventually and verifiably eliminating
tens of thousands of really powerful nuclear warheads.)
By comparison, the pyramids of Egypt are less than 5,000 years
old, while the carefully preserved cave paintings at Lascaux,
France, do go back some 29,000 years. Their knuckle-dragging
grafitti on the surface of this planet is better than ours. . .

Remember having to hold on to that railing the whole way around...
seems forever! Sure was fun, though. And remember the "roller rink
police", with the whistle they'd blow if someone tried going the
wrong way - clockwise -, or was otherwise acting out. The "police"
were wonderful skaters, and I loved watching them... skating
backwards, etc. I think I had to choose between a chocolate dip
soft vanilla ice cream cone from Tastee Freeze, or to skate...

I remember going to the roller rink most weekends during high
school. That was the place to hang out when there wasn't any other
school function going on. I'm sure, now that people are talking
about it, things were going on and not so likeable people were
there, but the girls that I ran around with were there for
skating. Of course, it was fun to see which boys were there as
well. Always hoped to see the boy you liked at the time there.
It's so nice that the roller rink is still there and running as
so many of the places that we grew up with are now gone.

My mom let me go on Friday nights when I was in grade school...
she even made me a skating outfit and I remember the soldiers
being there... I was about 7-8 years old, and one of the wheels
on my skate fell off, and a soldier picked me up and carried me
to where my mom was sitting. I remember going in junior high and
high school, too. I was never allowed to go to "Hi-Spot". Mom
didn't like that it was next to the pool hall. Guess she figured
being around servicemen was safer than being around whoever would
be hanging out at the pool hall. *grin*

BEFORE the 30th... but I am loath to mention HER name cuz it'll

But anyway, Doug, HAPPY BIRTHDAY a day late cuz Ellen blew it...
and then to make matters worse, that guy, Jimbeaux ('63) forgot
to wish the ever young and lovely Miss Nancy ('65) a happy
anniversary (I think it should be "an" Happy... but since ecb3
('63) isn't lookin' who cares)... so I forgot, too... and the guy
claims to be "the" Oracle... brother! So I'm sittin' around this
morning paying bills and trying to remember what other crappy
little jobs need to be done when the guy from the tire store
called me and told me that the tires I ordered for the Shelley-
Mobile and my little '27 roadster were in a whole week early... (I
owe you, Corky Coker!) so I sat inna tire store from noon to 4
getting tires and tubes on those two beasts... bout time... I
won't confess how old the tires were but I was getting a little
nervous about long trips tho I did go out to El Marage in the
roadster a few weeks ago (after staying awake all night hoping I'd
make it home from Manti in June)... I figured just one more trip
would be ok... didn't Carly Simon sing a song about that?
P r o c r a s t i n a t i o n... or something like that... do you
know how cool it is to hear "Tall Cool One" played on '50s on 5?
and since the "wrong" version of "Louie Louie" wasn't released
till around '64, they don't play that on my station so I don't
hafta listen to it... ahhhhhhhh but I love the button that lets
you repeat a song when ever my 3 favorite songs from 1960 come
on... "Over the Rainbow"... "Image of a Girl" and "Theme from a
Summer Place"... oh yeah... and I do the same when "Where or
When" comes on... well then I guess I do it when "Smokey Joe's
Cafe" comes on too... so maybe I overreacted on the three 1960
songs... but here we are just a day away from the yearly "run to
the boarder" when the donut boyz 'n' me head for Primm Nevada and
freeze our little fannies off AGAIN... One year the Vagos got in
my face because our club jackets didn't have "CC" on them. Jimmy
HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) had painted our club logo on several of our
leather jackets... so to avoid any more confrontation with those
bone heads I asked Jimmy to paint "CC" on my jacket... when he
gave it back... it had snakes wrapped around the entire surface,
evil looking clowns (but then aren't all clowns evil? I mean I've
seen enough horror movies to answer that... just like those icky
little dolls with teeth), pin stripes of every description... but
NO "CC"... what a guy... so to answer the ever pending question;
"Are you lonesome tonight?" I say heck no... I got alla you to
keep me company! HAPPY NEW YEAR BOMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!

It was the best skating there wasn't it?!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not
remember the soldiers, probably because I was in love with a boy
younger than me by two or three years!!!!! I had no eyes for
soldiers. Good thing huh?! I was still a child and I am glad for
that!!!!
My parents kept a tight rein on me considering how I acted out
later in high school. Good thing there was no pot or drinking in
those days at least for me!!!!!!!
It would be so hard being a parent today. I am so glad I am the
gramma now really the Memaw and I can have wonderful relationships
with my grandchildren. It's amazing how you see everything when
you can stand back and watch. It makes it all worth it doesn't
it?!!!!

All I remember about the skating rink was that my dad would
never let me go there. I remember being invited to go by lots of
different kids and the answer was always "No". I always wondered
what the big mystery was about and how did he know what went on
there, I don't think he ever went skating there. When I got older,
high school or maybe college, they had bands there and I remember
dancing there a lot, and by that time, I was fully aware of what
was going on in places like that. I was older, but not very much
wiser, HA.
Oh and when the Army came to town to do some war practice out in
the desert, my dad (I was a sophomore in high school) sternly told
me that I couldn't even go out in the yard... all the mystery...
Yeah, one of those green jeeps was going to screech to a halt and
drive off with me...
I was still living at home when I went to CBC and one time a bunch
of us tried to see how many people we could stuff in a 1960s
hatchback... don't remember who was driving, but I was in the way
back, and trying to get out of the car (we lived on Harrington
Road in West Richland), and there is my dad out in the driveway in
his pajamas and bathrobe... hollering out, "What is going on?"
He did apologize to me the next day for showing up in his
pajamas... he was embarrassed. He was overly strict... he was the
wild one in his day, so he knew all the tricks. Bless him, miss
him so much.
