Re: Tiny ALLEN (?48-RIP)

I just read Dick McCOY's ('45) message about Tiny passing. I have
many pleasant memories of Tiny. Way back in the year of 1946 I met
Tiny and we became friends and we became good buddies. And in 1947
I got kicked out of high school, and Tiny asked me what am I going
to do now. I told him that I was going to join the Army Air Force
and that's what I did. And when I got out of the service in 1950
came back to Richland. I got in touch with Tiny. He got me into
jalopy racing. He and I did that for about two years. We and other
work on old cars and hot rods. In 1950 I went back to high school
and finished in 1952. In 1952 when I graduated I left for Southern
California. Then back in 1969 I moved back to the Tri-Cities. Over
the years I got in touch with Tiny. I saw Tiny about three months
ago, to show him my new hot Rod.

It seems like they are going away. I am going to miss him a lot.

See Ya later, Tiny.

One certainly hopes that the Junior Gyrene (aka "Tooter") has taken
this time to get his eyeballs re-calibrated. They may be called
upon to serve again. Or, at least, get him to the Olympia
"clambake". Not that he's really needed there, but it seems to be
his duty to crash parties of upper classmen/women/persons (you pick
the pc term).

      next week.

Re: "Tiny" ALLEN ('48-RIP)

It was sad to hear about the passing of Duane "Tiny" Allen. Duane
got the nickname Tiny because in high school he weighed in over 300
pounds. When we were in high school we were having a blow out beer
party in a two bedroom prefab in Richland when it was raided by the
cops. I ran into one of the bedrooms and was going to crawl out the
window. When I got in the room I looked at the only window and Tiny
was stuck in it half way through. I tried to push him out and that
just made things worse. He told me to pull him out so I pulled him
till he was loose. I then ran over and crawled into the tiny closet
that prefabs had. Tiny ran over and tried to climb in with me but
he couldn't get the door all the way closed so he just held it
tight. The cops came in and said, "All right, whoever's in there
come on out." Tiny responded by saying, "There ain't no one in here
but us mothballs." The cops started laughing and they couldn't
stop. They enjoyed it so much they let us go.

I'll miss Tiny and his wonderful sense of humor.

Hey, Pappy (George SWAN ('59)), how are the elves? I miss hearing
about their antics. Miss hearing about your antics, too. *grin*
been way too long since you have delighted us with their escapades.
"What's up, buttercup"? *grin*... fill us in, please.

Re: USMC

My 19-year old grandson is officially a "gyrene/jarhead"... he was
sworn in, Monday, at the recruiter's office in Bakersfield, CA...
then was driven down to Camp Pendleton (San Diego, CA) to start
boot camp... won't be home til the middle of January... will be
the first time he has been away from home for the holidays... will
be hard not to have him "home" for Christmas, but he will be "out"
in time for his 20th birthday... he "graduates" the 16th of
January and his birthday is the 17th. *grin* I am proud of him
for following his dream (has wanted to be a Marine since he was a
little kid) and carrying on a long tradition of military men in our
family. I am sure my dad (RIP) is "popping his buttons", knowing
that a great-grandson followed in his footsteps and became a
Marine... he's the only one to choose that "branch of the
military". Way to go, Kevin... "Semper Fi".

Re: Old original "Sandstorm" issues from 1965-66 & 1966-67

I did some overdue house cleaning. I came across the following
which I had saved from school.

Does anyone or does anyone know anyone who would like the original
"Sandstorm" school newspapers for:
1965-66 issues 1-10, 15-19 & 24-25; and,
1966-67 issues 1-14, 15-16 & 'Senior Sandstorm'

I also have a special school paper: "Tri-City Hairoiled" Vol. 23.
Richland, Washington, March 32, 1967, No. 13 (notice the date).
[that's the 1967 April Fools' issue. -Maren] It looks like it was
put together by Mike LONERGAN ('67) & Paul WELLMAN ('67). It
contains spoof articles such as "Language Wing May De-Annex"
regarding a petition to have the Language Building de-annexed
from the rest of the school.

If you're interested, contact me via e-mail and I can arrange to
get them to you.
