Congrats to Jack GARDINER ('61) in staying off cigarettes for 16
years! And, yes, the urge to smoke can linger for many years. I
feel an occasional "twinge" even yet, and I stopped smoking in
early 1976! I had smoked since high school, was smoking heavily
by the time I was 18, and "had the habit" for 24 years. I stopped
"cold turkey" once earlier, in the late '60s, but regressed after
several months. It is odd, thinking back, on the public attitude
toward smoking "back in the day". It was, for us younger guys, a
"manly" thing and we were emulating our parents and other adults.
Yet we KNEW they weren't good for us. I recall we even called them
"coffin nails" and "coughing nails". Too bad we didn't "get smart
sooner". So many people had suffered from the results of heavy
smoking... cancer, coronary issues, lung problems.

Re: 'Nother subject

I noticed that Hanford tours for this year just opened up, and I
got registered for a B Reactor tour. Also read that later on a new
tour will be added to hit some historical points such as the old
towns of Hanford and White Swan.

Those interested can go to the website Hanford Site for more info.

Bomber cheers!

Congratulations! I said the same thing when I quit smoking on
Easter Sunday, 1992: "If I can get thru one day without smoking, I
can never touch another cigarette or it will be all over." Anyone
who knew me didn't think I would ever quit, least of all me. I had
smoked for 40 years.

My next trip will be soon, as my daughter-in-law is expecting our
2nd grandson any day now out in Gardnerville, NV so I will be
heading out there soon to enjoy being with my first grand baby, and
my almost 11 year old grandson... so I won't be seeing much art,
but I love the natural beauty of the area. I miss mountains here
in the Midwest, and in Gardnerville you see the backside of the
Sierras.... enjoy jolly ole' England for us; we always say we'd
love to get back, but haven't worked it into our schedule in ten
years now. cheers!!

-Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) ~ Hope, IN where it hasn't yet reached
70° yet, but we are loving the above 32° temperatures!
P.S. How is the Smyth Florida reunion? I see it's in the 80s down
there. {GREAT, Helen! We're all back to our "homes" now. -Maren]

By tomorrow we'll have a better idea of who is in the "real" lead
as they begin coming off their mandatory "24" hour rest.

The Mackey brothers have both taken their "24" and they are moving
right along. Apparently Jason told Lance yesterday that he (Jason)
would help his brother, BUT ONLY if Lance planned to go all the say
to Nome. Jason said that (of the two of them) Lance KNOWS how to
come from behind and win this thing. Brotherly love.

"8" = mandatory 8 hour rest
all except Aaron, Aliy and Mitch (on "my' list) have taken

Congrats on your 16 years of non-smoking. I quit over 38 years
ago... times when I'd still like to have a cigarette, but, since
none of my kids smoke, I am not around anyone who does, so the
temptation isn't there. *grin*

-Linda REINING ('64) ~ rainy weather in Kuna, ID and temps in the
       40s... loving this weather.
