Bob, you express "confusion" on how to handle birthdays of twins.
As an identical twin, let me say that our mother handled this
awkwardness very well, almost, when John and I were still in 9th
grade. How are twins to give each other equivalent surprise-gifts
at the annual double-birthday celebration?

John (now in Portland, OR) and I had opted for simplicity the year
before, and decided to save each other the trouble of dreaded
shopping by skipping gifts altogether. It's a wash anyway, and the
time could be better spent together at the River slinging rocks
across to the seagulls on the nearest island (never came very close,
they fly away).

The next year in 9th grade we were instructed to exchange at least
something. We agreed to exchange TEN-spots and that this would
satisfy the mandate. On that special day, and in front of our
mother's watchful eye, I forked over a crisp ten dollar bill and
congratulated my brother on yet another birthday marking his
advancing maturity. John offered his profound appreciation and
then reached in his pocket to hand me, what, a FIVE-dollar bill...

He explained, "its been a bad year financially and I just can't
afford any more." Some twin birthdays still bring a good laugh over
fifty years later.

Re: Portland area Bomber lunch ~ 2/21/15
  http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Lunches/Current-PDX/00.htm

Hello Fellow Bombers,

We had another great visit at Lunch on Saturday, February 21st.
The visits focused on recalling our childhood in Richland
(a common topic), what's going on in our lives now and how
everyone is getting along.

The group consisted of Jan RUCKER Meyer ('55), Barbara CROWDER ('55),
Jeanie TURNER Anderson ('61) and Gary Anderson (Spouse),
Tom HEMPHILL ('62) and Linda Hemphill (Spouse),
Kathy LAMB Brown ('62), Marcia MILLER Neff ('62) and
Doug Neff (Spouse) and their granddaughter Audrianna,
Bill "BJ" SCOTT ('64), Cherrie TEMPRO Scott ('64),
Linda McKNIGHT Hoban ('65) and Denny Hoban (Spouse).

Thanks all for participating, and a special thanks to Bill SCOTT ('64),
-- writing as BJ Scott -- for bringing more books for us at Bomber
special cost. We absolutely LOVE the "Angel of the Gold Rush" and
the other two in Bill's Angel trilogy ["Angel's Daughter" and
"Legacy of Angels"]... and now "The Rail Queen".

Our next Lunch at Beaches on the River is Saturday, April 18, 2015.

Re: Neighbors and friends

I am very sure I did this post just the other day... can't believe
how time flies no matter whatcher doing... didja ever try and wait
for a minute? Just one minute... do you know how long a minute takes
to pass... an hour at least... unless you walk away from something
you are timing for a minute and then 5 minutes passes in a second...
funny how that works... the other day I was running late for my
yearly physical and I remembered I hadn't filled up one car so took
another... now I know I checked the gas in the second one before
leaving and it had a little above 1/4 tank... plenty to get there
and back... well on this particular car there is quite an amount of
space between the little empty bar and the "E"... as it is my
practice not to go below 1/2 in any car, this was unusual... no this
was lazy... yes you guessed it... ran outa gas for the first time
in years... cars are heavy to push... luckily I was just across the
street from a station when it stalled and luckily there were two
big guys walking by so... not too bad... back inna old dayz when
we bought gas with pop bottles, running outa gas was not unusual at
all... it was timing that mattered back then... ya didn't wanna
run out onna date because "she" would say it was planned... and you
particularly didn't wanna run out at a kegger that the cops found...
oh the turmoils of youth... speaking of youth, we got some very
youthful b-days today... I've already told alla stories on the two
guys and as for the Bomber-babes... well gentlemen never tell...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Carol WISE ('64), Bonnie BRISTOL ('65), Brian "Beej"
JOHNSON ('65) and Gary "Crowser/Croskie" CROW ('65) on your special
day, March 29, 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Bernie SIMPSON ('46-RIP)

Simpson's Collection Donated to Richland Library

For decades Spence/Bernie, our Dad, brought his collection of
Hanford and Richland memorabilia to class of 1946 Columbia High
School reunions and then to "Club 40" events. 27 mounted
photographs, articles, programs, news clippings and reports all
chronicling the early days of the area we all call "home". Late
last year, we donated "Bernie's Collection" to the Richland Library
Archival Collection where it now lives for all to enjoy. Take a few
minutes to bring your family and friends down to the library the
next time you are in town and take a look at the "early days" and
birth of Hanford proudly arranged in the glass display case. Thanks,
Dad!

Postscript: Dad was born August 28, 1928, in Olney, IL and moved
to the Tri-City area in 1943 when his parents were employed on the
Hanford Project. He later met and married his wife Ethel Sholberg.
Dad was an alumnus of Richland High School and founding member of
the Richland High School "Club 40". He was serving on the Board at
the time of his death.
