Maren, Thank you for explaining a necessary vision correction.
I, for one, will empathize completely if and when you need to
take a leave of absence for recovery.

Bomber cheers,

Maren - sounds like you are doing the correct procedure
for your eyes. See as many specialists as you can. I have a
wonderful ophthalmologist and he did my cataract removals. I am
Type 2 Diabetic, and have had Lazic surgery in the past, so he
was extra careful with cataract removals. Went great just had
my 6 month check up and he says its fantastic.

Re: Club 40

Our Spring DustStorm newsletter will soon be coming out. The
deadline for writing an article and getting it to our Editor,
Ann Thompson, aka Anna May WANN ('49), is MAY 18TH. All Club 40
members through class of 1974, who have paid their dues, will
receive the DustStorm (about the first of June). All of you
feel free to send something to Ann!! Everyone who receives a
DustStorm enjoys reading about classmates. Even heard from
Gordon Pappas, who says he loves it and looks forward to
receiving his.

Another deadline will be for registering to join us at our
September 11th and 12th meeting and social time. That dare is
August 28th, and you will have the registration form in the
DustStorm to send in by that date. Remember, there are NO WALK
INS! This makes it very important for those of you who are
members to have your dues paid up. Yearly dues per Bomber are
$10 each. This is such a fun time and please don't miss it!!

Send dues to our new Treasurer, Kathy HOFF Conrad ('64), at
Club 40, P. O. Box 1832, Richland, WA 99354. Kathy's e-mail
is kconrad6318@charter.net if there are any questions. She
is also keeping up the database on all Club 40 members, so if
you have any address, phone or e-mail address changes, please
contact Kathy.

Feel free to contact me.

To: Ann Thompson, aka Anna May WANN ('49)

I had a friend whose last name was Ming and they were not
Chinese! They used to have to register with Sears to get on a
waiting list for a washer and dryer, or refrigerator. When they
would go check on where their name was on the list, it was
always on the bottom! They were born in the '20s so this was a
long time ago!!

To: Joan PHILLIPS Wile ('54)

Don't know how I could have missed your birthday on Saturday,
when you are always so sweet and send me a card on mine!! I am
so sorry, dear friend and I will make it up to you!! When are
you coming to Tri-Cities again and joining us for lunch??

Re: message for Maren

Hi, I had cataract surgery a few years back on both eyes. No
complicating factors. I had to make a choice of lenses and
insurance wouldn't pay for an expensive model that would
provide both near and far vision. Still each operation took
around an hour and recovery was mostly getting over the
anesthesia. Results were great, still need to wear reading
glasses which is not a problem. I hope it all goes well for
you, I encourage you to get a second, third opinion if you are
in doubt about the procedure or prognosis. Our thoughts are
with you. Good luck.

I also had a cornea transplant in 2001 at UW (Dr. Devon
Harrison). You just hold your breath for years and hope that
it won't be rejected. I understand that each time you get
another one, there is a higher probability of rejection.
I had cataract surgery on the "other eye" in 2003. Still
holding off on my cornea transplant eye. Can get a clear lens
put in during surgery and wear a contact lens for really clear
vision or can have a toric type lens put in to correct vision
but it is a crap shoot on how well your vision will turn out
and they are pretty permanent once put in. It's a big step.
(Toric lens not paid for by Medicare either ($1000. extra).
They consider it cosmeticsurgery).

Maren, you have a lot of other more complex problems with your
eyes. Wish you the best.

Re: Maren

Cataract surgery can be a breeze - when I had mine a couple
of years ago, he did 18 procedures in one day, yet the staff
prepared me very thoroughly and was just as professional as any
surgery. Mine included insertion of a special lens called Toric
to correct astigmatism. With the extreme care necessary for
your situation, it will likely be somewhat less routine. I am
praying for you.

Regards, ecb3 - from the second gorgeous spring day in a
forecast string of four here in central Virginia, and supposed
to be unseasonably warm at 80.

Bless you on your fight with your vision, Maren. Many Bombers
are sending positive thoughts your way.

[Thanks, Bill. Plan to finish "Light On a Distant
Hill" before my appointment on the 21st -- just in
case. Still looking forward to your next book. -Maren]

Frank [hubby] just had cataract surgery this past Tuesday. He
only needed the left eye done. No cloudiness in the right eye
at this time. There really isn't any downtime. From beginning
to end, it took about 2-21/2 hours. I don't really remember.
The actual surgery was about 20 minutes. Came out with a big
ol' bandage on his eye. He is taking 2 kinds of drops 4 times
per day. Don't know how long he has to do that. He sees the
ophthalmologist this Wednesday for a check up and then again
in a month. Only restriction at least until he sees the doctor
this week is that he can't lift anything heavy to put stress
on his eye. He had all this done thru the V.A.

Re: nothing lasts forever

Back in November, I was wishing a former partner (I use the
term loosely as I'll splane) whose b-day is 12 days before
mine an HB. She commented that it was a bad time for her to be
looking for a job. I inquired and she told me what she could
but then said "save all your old Lionel Sawyer & Collins stuff
as it may become valuable"... Since I no longer take the paper
(which means I pretty much don't go to funerals any more) and
don't watch local news, I essentially left it at that. But the
other day I got the latest bar mag and instead of casting it
in the pile I flipped thru the pages and saw that the former
managing partner (my age) and another old friend of mine (a bit
younger) had started their own partnership... all of a sudden,
a couple of other partnerships I had run into started to make
sense... I checked and sure enough, my old firm had dissolved
as of January 1, 2015. As I read a few articles I saw a picture
of my old Partner/Mentor, Sam Lionel sitting with the managing
partner of one of the Phoenix firms that had migrated to
Nevada... he too was an old friend of mine but several years
younger than I... it was kinda sad to see Sam at 95 working at
another firm. I remember back so many years ago as I left to
start a firm with another couple of guys... A year before, I
had asked one of the guys who was becoming a partner what the
"buy in" was... he was not supposed to tell, but he did say
that his first year would be over 100K and that was "interest
only"... crap... all I could think of was "what the hell do
you get for that???!" As the years passed and guys who Sam
wouldn't have given the time of day when they were just
"lawyers", began to be laterally hired because they were now
former Senators and such I saw more and more partners leaving
their money and bailing... all I could think of was all that
moola for nothing... so now the firm is gone and the shares are
worthless (they were always worthless... it's not like you can
transfer shares inna law firm)... kinda makes one's stomach
turn... I'm sure this has all been very interesting to you
all... but it really makes the analogy of the bucket of water
and removing one's fist and leaving no trace behind come
to life for me... in the end, all we have is our name and
reputation to leave and the hope that others remember us
fondly... OK OK I know this all sounds a bit morbid and I'm
sorry... it wasn't meant to be... Today is a big day for a guy
I enjoy greatly and am so glad to have become buds with (sorry
ECB3 ['63])... Oh sure he takes flak from Jimbeaux HAMILTON
('63) for not making this event or that event... but he is
certainly one of the good guys and I'm proud and glad to say
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Frank WHITESIDE ('63) on your special day, May
4, 2015!!!
