Re: Mt St Helens eruption

When the eruption occurred, my wife Ruth and I were living in
Juneau, AK. However, Ruth had flown south to Seattle that day -
our daughter in Port Angeles, WA was having complications with
the impending birth of a granddaughter. The eruption occurred
as her flight approached Seattle, and - as I understand it - her
flight was one of the last to "get down" before they temporarily
closed SeaTac Int. Airport. Then rental cars weren't available -
rental outfits quit renting cars for awhile because they thought
the engines would be damaged by volcanic ash. She made it on to
Port Angeles via bus.

I had taken a day off and was out salmon fishing much of the day
so knew nothing of these events till evening.

Yakima area arguably had the most fallout of volcanic ash.
Ruth's mother's home was covered with it - wheelbarrows full of
it were cleaned off the roof, yard, driveway et al. Farmers were
worried about crops - but as it turned out, I understand the ash
was nutrient rich, and crops were above average for a few
years....

Well, Mt. Rainier is probably next - not "if", but just "when".
At least that is what an old geology prof friend of mine has
said.

I would have to agree with those who state that too many Bombers
are passing on. But so are lions and tigers and bears (oh my).
To say nothing of cougars, huskies and beavers. And I did think
it interesting that at someone's celebration of life that
participants were requested to wear the Blue and White of the
Carmichael Cougars.

But not to the point. The point being that yet another member
of The Class of '54 is celebrating a birthday today. I think we
were near neighbours on Sanford, but I could be wrong. I did
know him back in the day, although we did not "hang together".
Nay-the-less, a tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a shout of
"Happy Birthday!" is in order for Allan AVERY ('54). Just keep
on keepin' on.

weather can't seem to make up its mind.
