We had just moved into our housing (Men Rive in North Charleston) and our daughter, Christy (3yrs.) was riding her tricycle on the sidewalk in our front yard. Suddenly she started screaming and rolling on the ground. We ran out and found her legs covered in tiny ants that looked like the 'sugar ants' that we had grown up with. She was covered in bites and sobbing so hard she could hardly catch her breath. Our neighbor said they were fire ants that bite. Since she is allergic to wasp and bee venom we rushed her to the ER. She was treated the same as our asthmatic son was when he had an attack. The rash of bites was very ugly and painful so she was on medication for about a month. The pest control people came to get rid of the nest and we didn't have any more incidents during the eight months we lived there. We were very watchful whenever outside, though. From there we were stationed in Orlando, FL and still had to be on the watch for fire ants (and water moccasins, alligators, and cock roaches (Palmetto bugs, my eye!)) Oh, the joys of the South, but we loved it! -Marie RUPPERT Hartman ('63) ~ in very HOT Cool Desert Nights' Richland *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Lori SIMPSON Hogan ('70) To: Bruce STRAND ('69) Re: Bombers in Vegas, 6/26/15 Did you check the 1970 class site?
