So I put my ball uniform on real quick and went to see him. I left him at 6pm... sometime before 7pm Buz passed. Besides Buz's family and friends, baseball was his first love. He always envied me because I was still able to play. Tonight we beat the number one team in the league 9-7. this game is dedicated to you, my good friend... God Bless!! -Jack GARDINER ('61) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: I am blessed For all of you who are easily bored, time to just skip this post cuz it's gonna be long and disjointed... what they call scream of conshusness... I got home late this morning [6/29] from my yearly trip to Richland and the joy and memories are flooding in... I can't really call it the Sorry 7 or '65er gathering, as it was so very much more and in ways much less... a whole buncha kids didn't make it this weekend but those who did filled it to the brim... I won't go into the trip on Ally-giant but I didn't get to the DQ till around 9 and many kids had split... korse Jimmie ADAIR ('65-'67) and Kathie MOORE ('69) were there in spite of all Kathie has been and is goin' thru... she was a trooper... Friday morning a whole bunch of us met at the Spudnut Shop... Somehow Ron SLEDGE ('65) drove from Vegas and still beat me... John COLE ('66), Larry GREER ('65) and I made plans for the secret get together in the later afternoon (Sorry Roger GRESS ('61) from now on I will give you the high sign)... Katie SHEERAN ('61) showed up in cog neeto (no Kim Novak shirt, but she made up for it Saturday)... we touched base with as many as possible in the heat then around noon we were all gone... Cecilia BENNETT ('65) and I hit the Farmers' Market for some nice breads and smoked salmon which we forgot to put out... as the day progressed Mont ('63) and Jimbeaux ('63) started bringing over chars and ZZ Top hats (a how how how) and CMOORE ('65) and sister Nancy ('70) made their way over... Rosalie ('63) and Chuck arrived and things were getting perfect... now for those of you who missed it and haven't seen the pix on face book... this event had been the subject of months of work by CMOORE, John COLE, Mick HEMPHILL ('66), Gary WEBB ('64) and several others... it was an effort to place Pierre REMILLARD ('65) and Jack KEENEY ('65) in the spotlight to receive Quilts of Valor for their service to our country during the Vietnam War... as time progressed, John was bright enough to realize we needed a mole... at that time John brought Pierre into his confidence to be sure and get Jackson to the church on time... no easy chore I will say... of course he neglected to tell Pete he was being honored as well... Jack, Pierre and Dick STEPHENS ('66) showed up a little early, but they were busy playing tunes and caterwauling... er I mean singing... the crowd began to gether... now sure how I forgot to tell Ken DAME ('68) the procedure, but I did... thankfully he called me early and I told him the plan for the boyz... As he did for my Quilt last summer, Ken got right on the phone and called General Jim MATTIS ('68) who came flying over with a plate of goodies in hand... Steve HAGGARD ('65) became my BFF by showing up with some fruit Rush Limbaugh teas... I hate sweet tea... not any more!... Terry DAVIS ('65) was in awe as he missed my presentation last year... I am pretty sure John CAMPBELL ('63) reacted pretty much to meeting Jim as Mary Lou WATKINS ('63) did last year except he didn't try and shake his hand with a glass of red wine in his hand... oh wait... I'm not supposed to tell that... nevermind, ML! The presentation by John and Mick was superb as always... I was sure KEENEY cried way more than I did, but Carolyn ROE ('63) has assured me that is NOT the case... Jimmie ADAIR (a recipient of a quilt) wanted to impress some people and introduced the General as one of his "Army buddies"... the response was to be expected: "I'm a Marine". Corse only Adair could run over a land mine and get a butt reduction so consider the source... Ellen WEIHERMILLER... THAT'S WEIHEERMILLER ('63) and Doug HAWKINS ('62 also a recipient) made it on time and Doug and I hugged as though we had known each other all our lives... OK OK I did give Ellen a peck onna cheek... OK I gave alla girls at least one peck onna cheek... hey why waste the moment... It was a truly magnificent and touching evening... Eventually I got dinner at Denny's around midnight with Cecilia and the Adairs... Saturday, was early Spuddies again... Katie did her best Kim Novak and I fell in love all over again... Terry DAVIS ('65) brought Craig DAVIS and wife Pat and I was able to catch up with my best Spalding friend ever... Pancakes with the DeJongs was about all I could do in the heat and off I went for a nap... Doug and Ellen went to see the Cows at Katie's, but I missed the field trip again... listening to Katie explain the fine art of washing cow butts was about all I could take (did you know those things just stare at you while they poop!)... I'm sure Oklahoma Doug got a real kick out of it... by the way... if you happen to hook up with Doug, you need to scream in his left ear... but don't mention I told you to... in the evening, the party at Myra WEIHERMILLER's ('67) was intimate and a whole lotta fun... Myra and I played Doug and Ellen in a game of something or other and whooped ass... after the game Myra came running over to me and kerplow... I thought she was trying to jump my bones after all these years, but I learned she was doing a belly bump... I'm told it is whatcha do when you win a game... I liked the bone jumpin' idea better... Sunday was special. I haven't been able to catch Jim STULL ('62) in a couple of years... as you probably know, Jim has been battling cancer since about 2002... Ken DAME ('68) picked the Divine Ms. Hoff ('64) and me up and ran us out to Jim's... Jim looked great and it was so refreshing to spend half a day with him just reliving old times... I wouldn't have missed it for the world. As I said, I am blessed... I no longer use the word "luck"... I have escaped death enough times to know that luck has nothing to do with it. I am sending a picture of the Boyz and General MATTIS with this post. I can only say that no matter the size of our gatherings, she are VERY special events! http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Riv/150630-Boyz-Quilts.jpg Jack KEENEY ('65), Jim MATTIS ('68) and Pierre REMILLARD ('65) -David RIVERS ('65) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Tedd CADD ('66) Re: unusual summer heat Not to be bragging but the Tri-Cities is forecast to have temperatures at least 10 degrees above Death Valley, CA for the next week...
