This morning (yesterday, as you read this) I watched the 2nd
Portable being loaded on trucks and removed from across the
street at the "old" Lewis and Clark. One more to go. Their next
assignment is at Ki-Be.

According to AKA's post, also this morning... I'm thinking
sxign-ups for Club 40 are falling well below expectations.
Maybe now they will let "drop-ins" IN. I didn't go last year
but have registered for both evenings this year.

The 4th of July this year will be a red letter day for me, my
youngest daughter Janet Taylor and youngest granddaughter Jordan
Rawlings---we are... ta da (drum roll please) "Leavin' On A
Jet Plane". First stop, as always, is Seattle, then Dallas, TX,
then London, England! After a few days there, we'll Ferry over
to France! One night in a small town outside of Paris, then...
PARIS! The DeVine ancestors went to England from France. They
were accomplished silk weavers back in the day when silk was
THE fabric for Aristocrats and Royalty. There is a very small
chance that we will rent a car and drive to a certain town in
Scotland--country of the Hodges side of the family! Janet and
Jordan (aunt and niece) have been talking about this for a
couple of years and, suddenly, I'm invited to go along. It helps
to be the $$ behind the adventure. (I will be reimbursed. It's
just a matter of timing.) Talk about "timing", I'm seeing that
France is having a major heat wave. Aargh! When we first were
checking lodging, etc, temps were in the high 60s, in other
words: perfect! Now in the 90s!!!! Probably humid, too. This
is a trip of a life-time for me and we will super enjoy it,
whatever the weather! **grin** Optimistically, I am taking
rain gear.

I'm hoping people will forgo individual fireworks this year and
enjoy the professionals! Too much fire danger. (I've already
seen and heard the explosions and twirling lights, so I know
that is a wasted "hope".) There is a certain self-centeredness
about some (too many) people so I guess I'll change that to
hoping the fires aren't too bad.

Bon voyage, Amigas et Amigos. Oops, mixing languages won't be a
good thing!

-Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) ~ livin' the good life!

Re: Pea Harvest!

I passed thru the Milton-Freewater area some 15 years ago right
in the middle of harvest season. Not a pea in sight. for miles
in all directions only grapes. The whole area has turned into a
wine mecca. Seems they make more money with a lot less workers
and factories. Now Milton-Freewater (which resembled a town out
of Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath") now is a quite nicely painted
tourist trap with antique stores all over the area.

Had mixed emotions about that upgrade. Seems they found other
areas to grow peas.

Re: Bomber tears!

Bob MEAKINS (54), passed away during the night of July 1st.
Joyce, Bob's wife, sent me a message and asked me to notify
the Sandstorm and Dust Storm. Bob had suffered for a couple
years with COPD, and was getting better this last month. He
wrote to me several times before and after our 60 year class
reunion last year and was looking forward to getting his Dust
Storm. Joyce said they are planning a Celebration of Life for
Bob in October so more family can get there in Arizona. Bob's
address is in our 60 year class booklet, or if anyone wants
their address, you can notify me. RIP - Bob!!

Re: Club 40 September 11th and 12th meeting:

You will soon be able to see who has reserved their spot in the
fun weekend in September with Club 40!! Just remember... the
classes of '55 and '60 will be joining us in the evening, so
those reservations will be large and it's "first come, first
served", with a capacity of 300 at Red Lion in Richland. NO
tickets sold at the door!! This means, please don't hesitate
to send in your reservations!!

I have been able to recruit a couple more reps (years '50 and
'70), THANK YOU! and classmates who have not been to Club 40 in
many years, so it will fill up fast in this next month. We are
still in need of several Bombers to represent their class on the
Board of Directors. PLEASE!

Did you notice the Richland reunions listed in the July 3rd Tri-
City Herald? [Also check the list of Bomber reunions on the
RichlandBombers.com website... AND the Bomber Calendar. -Maren]
If you need a contact name for classes of '55, '60 or '75, it is
there. And, yay, we will have some members of 1975 at Club 40,
their first year of eligibility. Now we need to get more of the
younger group from the '60s and '70s to come!!

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!!!

Hi Maren:

You might want to post this in the Alumni Sandstorm tomorrow.

We just stopped at Safeway in Modesto, CA and they had Lake
Chelan cherries for sale (beautiful red ones and so tasty) on
sale for $1.99 per pound.

Needless to say, I bought a couple of pounds for the 4th of July
holiday.

Re: Happy Fourth of July

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us as a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Re: BRATTON ('??) continues worldwide trek ~ 7/3/15 Herald

"Former Richland High School swimmer Lisa Bratton is
growing accustomed to long-distance flights. Last
summer, Bratton got to break out her passport for the
first time when she was selected to compete for the
United States at Pan Pacific Championships in
Australia. The soon-to-be Texas A&M sophomore added
another stamp to her passport this week when she flew
to South Korea for the World University Games in
      Gwangju."

"Heats start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Gwangju (4:30
p.m. Friday in the Tri-Cities). It will be 3:39 a.m.
Pacific time (7:39 p.m. in Korea) on Saturday when the
semifinalists are scheduled to go off."

"Bratton is one of 25 women on the U.S. roster. She
will swim the 200-meter backstroke in Gwangju, which is
16 hours ahead of the Tri-Cities and has a population
of 1.5 million people. It's four hours south of Seoul
      via bus."

"Based on her rapid ascent to international competition,
it might not be too far-fetched to think that Rio de
Janeiro — host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics — could
be the next stop on the Lisa Bratton world tour."
