Re: Time never really passes

I received a call on the night of the 3rd from Susan SHEPARD
('67). As she has always been the best friend of the love of my
life during my senior year and for many years after, I guessed
the reason for the call... so I guess I was ready, if one can
be ready... I went back in time to when I was maybe 10 and first
became acquainted with her brother. Stanley ('65-RIP)... as
years passed I became friends with her brothers, Bob ('63) and
Jerry (NAB-RIP). In time she and I started dating and became
inseparable... When she was born, her Mom, Irene brought her
home and Stan began dancing and clapping his hands over his
sweet "little Dancy Jerry"... she was named Nancy Cheré...
I bought my 3rd or 4th car from Bob and ran with Stan a great
deal... she was always concerned about being the only girl among
such "guy" guys... she was beautiful and about as sweet as
anyone I've met... I felt like a big shot when Bob got married
and his best man was Kent Morrill... because the boys had all
been raised for a good bit in Puyallup, we spent a good amount
of time there too... We often stayed with Jean DEMITER ('62) who
was married to Jerry till he was killed in an awful car wreck...
Fifty years ago yesterday, Nancy, Jack KEENEY ('65) and I
headed for Idaho so she and I could get married... bad timing...
nothing was open and the whole town was down at the lake... we
always planned to try again but when Jerry was killed, she never
really recovered... we began to drift apart and I joined the
Marine Corps hoping she would miss me as much as I missed her...
I always stayed in touch with her mother and always called her
"mom2"... We also stayed in touch and saw each other now and
then... we had a really wonderful long weekend in Santa Barbara
and always seemed to know what was going on with each other...
in time it seemed she wasn't allowed to spend much time in
Richland... none of my bees wax why... I have a picture of us
with C MOORE ('65) and Pierre REMILLARD ('65) going to prom...
I guess I should post it with this. Several years ago I got an
uneasy feeling and felt I needed to call her Mom... the phone
rang a few times and she answered instead of her mom... she had
been driving by the old house on her way to her mom's funeral
and she just had to stop in... as she approached she heard the
phone ring; as she answered she started crying and said, "you
won't believe this but the last thing mom said was tell David I
love him"... Now, just a weekend ago, I spent the weekend with
C.MOORE, Pierre and KEENEY, kids who had been important in our
short time together... Nancy Cheré MIDDLETON ('67) passed away
on June 19, 2015. She will remain in my heart as she has been
for over 50 years.
