So sorry to read of your problems while in London. I'm hoping
you were able to recover some of your things. Not likely, I
know, but one can always wish.

To: Helen CROSS Kirk ('62)

I hope you are enjoying the same wonderful weather my daughter,
granddaughter, and I had during the 4 1/2 days we were in
London! We always hear about how rainy England is but we had
just 1 day of rain. It happened to be the day Janet and Jordan
went to the Globe to see Richard the II. They got soaked on the
walk there, but sat under a roof, so only the actors got wet
during the performance. Isn't the Globe impressive! I chose not
to go to the play, but on a previous day, we spent a wonderful
afternoon on a tour of the place. Thanks for the photos. I have
some but don't have the know-how to post them.

Meanwhile [back in Richland at home on Downing Street]:

This morning as I write this, both doors are open to the cooler
temperature, a welcomed change. The destruction going on across
the street has me almost speechless. (Yeah, I know: that'd be
the day!) One of the huge old trees was taken down earlier in
the week, roots dug up, the whole nine yards. All the blacktop
and concrete has been taken up, including the sidewalk--which
is too bad because there is no sidewalk on this side of the
street. Then, they dug up the grass and leveled the surface.
Then they dug down again, past the 16 or so inches of topsoil
into river bed. Tons of gravel and topsoil are stored in mounds
where the portables used to be. I find it interesting to watch
the heavy equipment at work. There is still grass over on the
Cullum side. Wondering, wondering! Maybe Betty AVANT ('69)
knows what the plan is. My great-grandson will be disappointed
that the play ground is gone. It was one of his favorite things
to do when he came to visit. He and his family will be moving
back to Richland later this month.

Bomber Cheers,
-Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) ~ in, like I mentioned, a pleasantly
      cooler Richland

Time for another birthday celebration of a Bomber Babe from
the class of '54. I first became aware of her when I entered
Carmichael for 9th grade. What a thought. We were "the big
kids". Well, at least as far as the corner of Lee and Thayer.
She has been a presence in my mind since. The fact that she
ran off during senior year and got married has dimmed her.

I know that sometime back, she professed to be of a "great
age"; well she reached 21, enough said. It is always good to
see her when she frequents Club 40, but I guess I'm gonna miss
her this year as she has more pressing business to attend to.

With that being said, it is now time to tip the ol' propeller
beanie and say "Happy Birthday, Skippy!" on this momentous
occasion and hope that there are many more to come. You still
are a bright star and we appreciate your presence in life.

In case you are wondering, all of this is for Gloria ADAMS
Fulcher ('54).

      cooler temps are coming.

An auction company in Phoenix has a monthly police, estate and
consignment auction which my wife and I frequented often when
we were furnishing our house, especially with paintings and
sculptures. We stopped when we ran out of wall and end table
space. Also, I've avoided looking at the catalog because we're
putting our 45-year-old son through the last two years of his
bachelor's degree.

However, I decided to look at the offerings for today's
auction, mostly the paintings. The lot description is
accompanied by a thumbnail picture – clicking on the picture
gives you an enlarged version. One picture had a familiar
background. It was a colorized photograph of the construction
of a dam. The description gave the title of the picture as "The
Dallas Dam" but I knew it wasn't anywhere near Dallas. The
terrain on the other side of the river could only be
Washington. I dragged my wife to the auction and we bought it
for $10 – my bid was the only one. Now I have to find a place
on a wall to hang it.

-David DOUGLAS ('62) ~ Mesa, AZ where I had to cut my evening
swim in the pool short - I ignored the rain since I was
already wet, but my wife doesn't want me swimming when
        there's lightning in the area.
