He died on Thursday, July 16, 2015, in Seattle so if anyone sees the obituary in the Seattle Times, please pass it on to us. [see entry from Jimbeaux today... -Maren] We were so lucky to honor By at Club 40's 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary in 2012 and visit with him and his wife. By was 92 when he passed. Recently in one of those Starbucks conversations with some friends I mentioned that as a kid I had seen my first professional football game in Pendleton, Oregon. I couldn't remember who all was playing, but do remember that one of the teams was the Dallas Cowboys. As I recall they played in the arena which later in the month was the site of the Pendleton Round-Up. I guess it's better to play football and roll around on the ground (think Andy Griffith here) before the cows and horses are let loose, oops poor choice of words. My iron clad memory was immediately besmirched, so in my own defense I did some G-2 work and found that indeed a game was played in Pendleton on Sep 4th, 1960. It was betwixt the Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys, with the Rams prevailing 49-14. It is still on the books as the smallest municipality to host a game between two NFL teams, (albeit "Outside a Metro/Micro Area of Less Than 100,000 Population"). There's always an asterisk when one's talking football. My first game involving NBA players, was when a barnstorming "All Star Team", that played at Pasco High School (don't step on the Bulldog)about 1959. Bob Cousy was there, as were Bob Pettit, Bill Russell and my favorite Clyde "The Clown" Lovellette. I think Pook ('63-RIP) was with us and he from that day forward modeled his "game" after Clyde, always having at least three fouls by the time he got off of the bus. At Sander's Field, I saw Satchel Page pitch for the Harlem Globetrotters against the House of David. My dad took me there to see Gorgeous George wrestle and Mike MATHIS ('61-RIP) and I went there to watch a Roller Derby match. I'm pretty sure that the Bay Area Bombers or the LA Thunderbirds were in the game as one or both were in about 95% of all Roller Derby whatever you want to call them, ever contested. Charlie O'Connell would have participated with a broken arm, as he always had a broken arm. Joanie "The Blonde Bombshell" Weston, would have also rostered as a Jammer. We weren't really out in the sticks after all, were we? That's all for today. -jimbeaux -Jim HAMILTON ('63) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Mike QUANE ('63) Re: Home on the Range My hiking buddy Flo, a two year old Jack Russell, had a little misadventure last Wednesday. As we were hiking home about 100 yards from the homestead, I noticed that she had disappeared and thought she had run ahead to the house. After getting home, showering, and still no Flo, I knew something was up. I returned to the trail and began calling her name. After a few minutes I saw her laying on the trail. I called her name, she stood up, wagged her tail and collapsed. Flo's face was swollen and she had two trickles of blood on her left cheek. She could not even hold her head up. Without a doubt - a rattlesnake bite! A phone call to the emergency vet and 45 minutes later Flo had an IV with medication flowing in her veins. She had been vaccinated for rattlesnake bites one month earlier but still needed a full vile of antivenin, pain meds, antibiotics and a night stay at the ER vet hospital. The first picture shows Flo the morning after as we were heading to her regular vet for a follow up. The second picture is Flo with her face and neck shaved clean and the bruising traced with a sharpie pen to monitor any spreading. The fang punctures marks were over an inch apart indicating a very large snake. http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Qua/150727-00.htm From near death to 90% recovery in 3 days, will the adventures never cease? -Mike QUANE ('63) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: Tanks fer da memeries Thanks to Jimbeaux ('63) for sending around a video called the "land that made me me"... talk abouta flood of memeries... it starts our with a picture of a map of Arkansas with Jonesboro prominently showing... spent a ton a time there in the '60s... tiny little place... dry county as I recall... last time I went thru I got lost and bagged it... Beale Street used to be a great place to go and now it's a zoo... last time there I walked about half a block and went back to the Peabody... which is still cool... Elvis was alive back inna day and Graceland was just a bigger house onna wide spot inna road among other little houses... the only thing that was still cool was Sun Records... Everyone wanted the Sun Records shirt I was wearing but they don't sell it no more... it was very old... hadda great time playing trivia with one of the girls that worked there... stumped her a couple of times... a lady close to my age working there and I had some great talks... she loved my shirt and said it had been many years since she'd seen one like it... Gene Porter, a former Judge here and long time buddy's Dad, Bill Porter was the Chief Engineer at Studio B in Nashville where Elvis cut most of his songs... he is a legend in Nashville for the great innovations he made in recording and the many times he saved Elvis from being killed by Chet Atkins for all his weirdness in recording (like recording one song in the dark so Elvis managed to bang his head on the mike at the end of recording... kapow does not sound good on a record)... he managed to splice a million goofs so that no one ever heard them and saved hours and hours of re-recording... the video also reminded me of what life was like in the Richland that made me... the B-day Bomber-babe and her famblie played a large role in my early days and I spent a buncha time at her house... it was one of those gathering places like the Parker's would be later for me only without all the making out (at least for my age group)... I'll be visiting with her sis ('65) in August and remembering alla good times... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Paula BEARDSLEY ('62) on your special day, July 27, 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** That's it for today.
