From the Soapbox Department:

Next Sunday we all turn our clocks to Standard Time. It would
be nice if the powers that be said that will be the last time
we do it. Doubt if they could get it done before then, which
would leave us on Daylight Time, but just for giggles call it
Standard Time. 'nuff said.

[I leave my car clock and one clock in my house
on Daylight Savings time... the clocks that are
      a P.I.T.A. to change. -Maren]

Got more important things to do here. There is a Bomber Babe
of my acquaintance who deserves some recognition at this time.
Now I knew her back when she was a junior and I a sophomore.
We thesped together once... don't think we were on stage at
the same time, but we were in the same production. For a brief
time she was my Editor on the real Sandstorm, but it didn't
last. Fortunately I see her at Club 40 Annual Meetings which
sort of takes up the slack.

A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" for
Norma LOESCHER ('53) on the momentous occasion of her 23rd
birthday. Really try to enjoy this one with whomever.

Helen CROSS Kirk's ('62) mention of Central UP church on
10/30/16 reminded me of a time I attended a Good Friday service
there. Tris MAYBERRY Knaff ('62) invited me to go with her.
Since it meant getting out of afternoon classes and the church
was a short walk away, I cheerfully went. The service was
somewhat different to the ones at Richland Baptist Church where
I was a member. The most unusual part was a group of young
girls dressed in white robes who did an interpretive dance
(although what it interpreted I wasn't sure). I hadn't seen
anything like that in church before.

After graduating from college and marrying a girl from
Honolulu, we settled in Kaneohe, Hawaii, and on several
occasions enjoyed watching Christian hula dances. Hula is
somewhat different from the CUP dance as it is like sign
language - certain movements and gestures have specific
meanings. What reminded me of all this was our worship service
here in Mesa Sunday. The choir sang "It Is Well With My Soul,"
my dad's favorite hymn. My older brother Walker DOUGLAS ('57)
sang it at his funeral. During the triumphant last stanza, a
young girl did a ballet dance, which was very enjoyable. I was
reminded of the Bible verse, Psalms 149:3 - "Let them praise
his name with dancing." The little girl certainly did that.

I went to CUP a few more times. Tris also invited me to a sex
education class at the church. One of the interesting dates I
had with her.

Richland Baptist discouraged social dancing. I went to four
dances in high school - our German class Christmas
party/dinner/dance (my date Patty BEZZIO ('63-RIP) spent the
evening in the restroom throwing up), the Thanksgiving Formal
with exchange student Vivian GERICKE ('62) (I asked other guys
to dance with her), the Tolo dance with Patty (she didn't throw
up that time - I guess she developed a strong stomach after
dating me for a year), and the Junior-Senior Prom with Tris (I
warned her ahead of time I didn't dance, so we just enjoyed the
music). The first time I actually went onto a dance floor with
a girl was in college. I had a blind date to a dance at a
girls' boarding school (shows you how desperate they were to
find dates for the girls) in Walla Walla. I was warned ahead of
time that the chaperons were to be able to see space between us
while we were dancing. However, my date didn't seem to know
about that rule. Nobody, including me, called her attention to
it. We may have moved to the music, but I'm sure nobody who
knows how to dance would ever call what we did dancing.

-David DOUGLAS ('62) ~ Mesa, AZ where it's cooling off and
becoming harder to keep the pool warm, although I
shouldn't complain as it's now November and hopefully
we'll have a couple more days to swim, and the water's
a lot warmer than the Columbia River

Was going thru the pictures of our Alaskan Cruise this summer
and found this shot of the Bomber Totem Pole at the Totem Bight
State Historical Park in Ketchikan.
