Be safe on the highways, people! I saw Betty BYRD ('53) today for the 1st time, probably, since graduation. We didn't actually recognize each other except for our names. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels for many years and dropped in to say hi to her old bosses. Just a note to let you who go to the "Mostly '52ers" Bomber Friday Lunch know that we'll be meeting at the QUEENSGATE STERLINGS. Same time -- just a new place. Maybe it won't be so crowded. -Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) ~ Richland where my Irises are growing new leaves, a few dandelions and the tips of the Lavender are blooming! Haven't checked the bulbs. It's a weird winter out there! ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Sara Ousley, aka Ann BISHOP ('56) Just want to say Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving to all Bombers. -Sara Ousley, aka Ann BISHOP ('56) ~ Fouke AR ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: time flies when... this is one of those days when a bit of a tear comes to my cheek and I recall my Senior year and the romance that accompanied it... a trip to Ideeho that was made on a Holiday and resulted in a very looooong drive home... KEENEY ('65) was to be our witness... but I suppose everything happens for a reason... I will say I was delighted when Kent Morrill was her brother's best man at his wedding (well laa tee daa)... sadly she has departed but left lasting love and memories for me and for many others... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Nancy MIDDLETON ('67 RIP) on your special day, November 24, 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Tedd CADD ('66) Re: General MATTIS ('68) and Duty Never one to neglect his duty, General MATTIS ('68) reported for jury duty in Benton County on Monday for a gross misdemeanor trial. http://www.tri-cityherald.com/news/local/article116590898.html PS: I love the story of his taking the duty officer post. [11/23/16 Sandstorm entry from Bob HANNIGAN ('60) -Maren] That is a Marine's Marine. -Tedd CADD ('66) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Ken STALEY ('68) Re: General MATTIS ('68) I suspect that those of us who went to school with Jim, or met him on other occasions, each has our special story. General MATTIS and I have been friends for many years. We met in high school and were friends during and beyond college. I've followed his career closely. Even as a youngster, Jim wanted to know how to be THE Commandant of the Corps... not just a Marine, but The Commandant. When he achieved his 4 star rank, I sent him a quick email and asked if he was ready to take over that position. His response was direct&Oh HELL no! I recall a conversation once concerning the Marine barracks destruction in 1983 in Beirut when 220 Marines lost their lives. I asked if he'd been on the ground in Beirut or in the area. No, was his response. He was a captain stationed in Washington D.C. at the time. His duties were much more difficult. As a captain, it was his job to travel with the clergy to the homes of those fallen, to notify the families of the incident. I recall reading a story about him once when he was transferred from one assignment to another. Those of us who are veterans and remember those moves, they can be especially hectic for families. Jim has never married. The biggest logistical problem his movers had, time and again, was moving his 5,000 books. Jim was in command of the 1st Marines during Desert Storm. I know there were many times when he butted heads with the DoD Chair Rumsfeld. I asked him about that on a few occasions and, tactful as ever, he usually replied with "one of these days we'll have a cold beer and talk." Speaking as a veteran, the fact that the new administration is considering Jim MATTIS as Secretary of Defense is one choice I can support. I know that Jim will have one thing in mind; protecting the lives of the young men and women who serve this country in uniform. Nothing less would motivate him. -Ken STALEY ('68) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* That's it for today.
