>>From: David DOUGLAS ('62)

I know how David RIVERS ('65) feels about cold weather. I had
my fill of snow growing up in Richland. After living in Hawaii
for 34 years, I don't think I could survive snow, which is
why I live in Arizona now. While in Hawaii I worked for the
hospital association and often spoke by phone to people on the
mainland. Sometimes they'd say, "It's so cold - 42°, but with
the wind chill factor it feels like 32." I'd reply, "I know
what you mean. Here it's 83 °, but with the wind chill it's
more like 82. Not everyone appreciated my comment.

I missed out on the discussion of veterans - my son was having
medical problems. Although I never served in the armed forces,
I'm sort of an honorary Marine - I was born on Parris Island
Marine Base. (I owe my very existence to the IRS, but that's
another story.) My dad served in the Marines twice, once during
the '30s as a guard at the American embassy in Peking, China.
Dad was an amateur photographer and took many pictures of
places in China that I never dreamed I'd get to see in person
some day, when I taught at Tianjin University for a year.

Dad served a second time in the Marines during WWII, when he
was stationed in the South Pacific theater. Before leaving he
gave my mom two pages from his small 3-ring notebook. One page
was just a list of numbers, the other a list of places in the
South Pacific. He had duplicate copies of the pages kept in
different places in the notebook he carried with him. When he
wrote letters to her, he'd always say something like, "I'm
writing to you at 9:28 in the morning." The '28' meant the
place that corresponded to the number 28 on the pages he gave
her. That way she'd always know where he was. Only once did a
suspicious censor cut out the time.

Mom got a telegram informing her that Dad was missing in action
during the battle for Iwo Jima. Dad was a gunnery sergeant back
when gunnery sergeants worked on guns. He had a trailer with
all his equipment and was scheduled to go ashore on D-day plus
3. While the crew was loading his trailer on the landing craft,
the craft capsized and sent his trailer to the bottom of the
bay. Dad had to wait until a supply ship could bring another
trailer. However, when he didn't show up on the beach on D-day
plus 3 he was listed as missing in action. While on the ship he
watched fellow Marines raise the American flag on Mount
Suribachi through binoculars.

-David DOUGLAS ('62) ~ Mesa, AZ where the temperature is a
balmy 72, but the pool water is 59, so I don't think
      I'll go swimming today

Re: Portland/Vancouver area Bomber PotLuck
  http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Lunches/Current-PDX/00.htm

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

The Portland/Vancouver area Bombers & Guests had a lot of fun
visiting and story-telling. This time we met at a private
clubhouse with a big screen TV, full kitchen, pool table and
shuffleboard. If I counted right, we had 23 people attending.

The potluck meal was a grand success with home-made chili,
meatballs, bean dish, mac & cheese with salmon, chicken pot
pie, deviled eggs (my favorite), salad with nuts, pie, and
several other dishes. I just love potlucks. Thanks, everyone
for your contributions. I'm not certain who brought what, but I
dished up a little of everything and loved it all. My brother
Mick ('66) has a code name for me at potlucks.

The Bombers and guests who helped us celebrate this time were
Bob CARLSON, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) and Karyl Carlson (spouse),
Jan RUCKER Meyer ('55), Ferna GAROUTTE Hicks ('58), Ferna's
friend, Carol Risner, joined us and fit right in. She is
welcome any time, Lola HEIDLEBAUGH Bowen ('60), Jeanie TURNER
Anderson ('61) and Gary Anderson (Spouse), Tom HEMPHILL ('62)
and Linda Hemphill (spouse), Dean ANSON ('62), Marcia MILLER
Neff ('62) and Doug Neff (Spouse), Ann ENGEL Schafer ('63) and
Tony Siegmund (Friend), Don FUNDERBERG ('63) and Tali
Funderberg (spouse), Bill Scott ('64) and Cherrie TEMPERO Scott
('64), John Fletcher ('64) and Becky WERSEN Fletcher ('65),
Linda McKNIGHT Hoban ('65) (Happy Birthday Linda) and Denny
Hoban (Spouse).

We all watched a slide show featuring some new shots of some of
the lunch gang and vintage shots of the olden days. We tried to
find ourselves in the photo of the old pool that was packed
with kids. Don Funderberg showed a great video featuring their
stay at a lighthouse on the Straights of Juan de Fuca. Great
photos Don. Ferna GAROUTTE Hicks brought some old photos that
we will scan and add to the show for next time. We looked at
old yearbooks and other memorabilia. We had fun.

Merry Christmas, Bombers.

Re: Jim MATTIS ('68)

Well, I just had to prove to my husband that, yes, General Jim
MATTIS is a Bomber. Had to pull up class of '68 website before
he would believe it (but what do you expect from a Bulldog?!).

-Deedee WILLOX Loiseau ('64) ~ Burbank, WA where it is COLD.
        I don't put a coat on until it's under 40; believe me,
I'm wearing my WARM coat these days!

Re: memories

light the corners of my behind... uhhhhhh... don't think that's
right... oh well it's not really that portant to the final
message... I find it interesting how little things creep from
what we think is lost forever back into the consciousness... I
mean some things do seem to be gone forever... like my very
first date... I know who I was with and where we went... I mean
I know it, but I can't really vision it... what I can bring
vividly to mind is the lights being out in Skip NUSSBAUM's ('65)
basement... and the door to the kitchen (?) being opened... end
of memory... now through discussions with the Bomber-babe I
have "knowledge" of the entire story... but the memory is
lost... so, as I was saying, in June of 1966 I went to my next
Duty Station and didn't again return until my 20 year class
reunion... don't ask why... I've got no reasonable excuse...
BUT, the Bomber-babe celebrating today, was the last kid
(Bomber-babe) I saw before I left... well not counting George
KELLY ('64) who left with me... I also remember the day I met
her... as clearly as anything I did 5 minutes ago (I say 5
minutes cuz I don't wanna push my luck on my current memory)...
it was after a sock hop at Chief Jo... she walked up to my
locker and stuck out her hand and said : "Hi, I'm Margi!"... so
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Margi MAY ('66) on your special day, December
9, 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re:James HARBOUR ('55-RIP)

I will emerge to say thanks to Mr. PANESKO ('83 and '84) for
drawing my attention to the sad news of Mr. HARBOUR's passing.

He was a good teacher and a fine gentleman who did me a couple
of favors that materially affected the course of my life.

Requiescat in pace.
